KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear Kodiak Middle School Families,
As we continue through the school year, I want to keep you updated on important information regarding student progress and support.
The first marking period ended on November 1st. Report cards will be sent home with students on Wednesday, November 6th. Please take some time to review your student’s progress, celebrate their successes, and discuss areas where they may need support or improvement.
If your student did not pass one or more core classes (English Language Arts, Math, Science, or Social Studies) this marking period, they will also receive a letter outlining options for credit recovery. This additional information will help guide you through the steps necessary to ensure your student stays on track for success in these essential subjects.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education. Should you have any questions about report cards or credit recovery, please feel free to contact us at 907-486-7460.
Warm regards,
Rena Rankin, Principal
Judith Bruns, Assistant Principal

LETTER TO 7TH/8TH GRADE FAMILIES
Families of 7th and 8th Grade Students,
Friday November 8th, Kodiak Middle School will be hosting the Fall Ball Dance for 7th and 8th grade KMS students. The dance will take place in the KMS Commons from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. There is an entry fee of $3 per student. There will also be concessions available for purchase.
As we prepare for the dance, we wanted to make our families aware of a few guidelines.
- Doors will open at 6:00pm. Drop off and pick up will be in the rear of the building at the Powell Street doors. Parking is available on Powell Street or the KMS playground.
- Once students enter the building, they will not be allowed to exit prior to 8:00pm without a parent/guardian checking them out.
- Only 7th and 8th grade students are permitted to attend the dance.
- 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in AK Teach or home school programs must complete the attached permission form in order to attend the dance.
- Dress code is casual, semi formal, and Halloween costumes (since we postponed the date of the dance). However, the costumes must still follow KMS school dress code guidelines.
- KMS Student Handbook rules apply for all school functions, including dances. This includes the expectations for the student dress code. If students arrive in inappropriate clothing, students will be asked to change or call home.
- Shirts/tops with an opaque front, back, and sides (under the arms) must be worn.
- The bottom seam of a shirt must overlap the top of the bottoms (pants, skirts, dresses, leggings, shorts.) No skin should be seen between tops and bottoms.
- Pants, skirts, dresses, leggings, or shorts must be worn.
- Length of pants, skirts, dresses, leggings, shorts, or other lower body clothing may not be shorter than the tip of the student’s longest fingertip, when student is standing with arms naturally hanging along the side of their body.
- Safe footwear must be worn (this excludes slippers, socks, and bare feet).
- Buttocks, genitals, and chests must be covered by an opaque outer layer of clothing.
- Clothing must cover undergarments. No bra straps should be showing.
- Clothing may not pose potential harm to other students (including spikes, sharp edges, and chains).
- No hate speech or bigoted language and/or symbols on clothing and/or body.
- No nudity, pornographic images, or sexual acts on clothing and/or body.
- Clothing cannot depict or advertise alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drug use. No images of plants or other sources from which illegal drugs are developed or engineered or created.
- No images or words that promote acts of violence toward an individual or group of individuals.
- Clothing that is considered disruptive to the environment may be addressed by administration.
Any behavior infractions that occur one week prior to the dance may result in the loss of privilege to attend the dance.
We are excited for the dance, and we look forward to seeing our 7th and 8th grade grizzlies have a great time!

We had a celebration pizza party to honor them.

Students in Textile Arts have finished their blankets!
MR. EVERHART'S INTEGRATED SCIENCE 8 CLASS
Students were given three beakers filled with clear liquids: baking soda solution, vinegar and a weak solution of sodium hydroxide and a fourth beaker filled with another strong base that was dark blue with bromothymol blue (a pH indicator that turns yellow in an acid) … they were asked to make green! Using the chemistry of pH they were successful in doing much more by making the colors of the rainbow that were possible using what they were given! Well done 8th graders!!
MRS. KING'S ART 7 CLASS
Students utilized artistic techniques and cultural symbols to design a trunk for the KHS trunk or treat. They participated as a team to hand out candy and maintain the decorations on a windy and wet Kodiak day.
HAND, FOOT, AND MOUTH DISEASE
Dear Parent/Guardian,
A very contagious, yet relatively benign, virus is circulating Kodiak called Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. The symptoms include tiny blisters on the hands and feet, as well as sores in the mouth. Young children may get a slight to moderate fever. The State of Alaska Epidemiology Dept. states that it is NOT required that kids with this virus stay home from school since the virus does not cause any severe symptoms or consequences. It is similar to a common cold. If your child has a fever and is not feeling well, or has weeping blisters, they need to stay home until the fever is gone for 24 hours without medication and until the blisters have dried up.
Although the symptoms are generally gone in 3-5 days, the virus actually remains in the stool for several more weeks. Thus, good hand washing is the key to stopping the spread of this virus. Please review good hand washing techniques with your children.
Good Hand Washing Techniques:
- Wash with soap and warm water for 30 seconds. (sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice)
- Wash all surfaces thoroughly between the fingers, under fingernails, palms, wrists and back of hands before rinsing off soap.
- Rinse well and dry hands.
- Turn off the faucet with a paper towel after drying your hands thoroughly.
When to wash hands
- After using the bathroom or changing diapers
- After handling raw meat, fish, or poultry
- Before eating
- After coughing, blowing nose or sneezing into tissue
- After caring for sick people
- After touching suspected contaminated objects
- After playing with pets
- After playing outside or playing sports
It is also helpful to avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth, and to disinfect commonly used surfaces.
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
