Subject: Today's Intruder Alert Drill Subject: Today's Intruder Alert Drill

Dear Parents/Guardians:

September 17, 2025

Dear BHMS families:

This letter serves to inform you about an Intruder Alert drill conducted today. At Beacon Hill Middle School, we prioritize creating a safe learning environment for our students, teachers, and staff.

In June 2023, Georgia HB 147 was amended to require every public school to conduct an “Intruder Alert" drill by October 1. All schools within City Schools of Decatur conducted the first Intruder Alert drill today, September 17, 2025, in conjunction with the district Safety and Security Department and City of Decatur first responders. The drill involved students, school administrators, teachers, and other school personnel based on guidance from the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency. Drills offer opportunities for our school to practice our emergency procedures to ensure preparedness for an actual situation. City Schools of Decatur uses a Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for emergency events. The SRP used for today's drill was the Lockdown response. You can learn more about SRP here.

We understand that recent tragic events may bring about various emotions for students during the Intruder Alert drill. If your child expresses any concerns or appears distressed after today’s drill, please feel free to contact a school administrator or your student’s school counselor. We are here to support our students and can arrange for counselors to speak with them if necessary.

The safety and welfare of our students, teachers, and staff remain the top priority in City Schools of Decatur. If you have questions about the Intruder Alert drill, please contact Director of Safety and Security James Brown at james.brown@csdecatur.net.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership in maintaining the safety and well-being of our school community. School safety is our top priority and a shared responsibility. As always, iIf you see something, say something. Working together, we can maintain a safe learning environment.

Sincerely,

Alexis Glenn

Interim Principal
