Blacklick Bulletin
Week of February 23, 2026 - Issue #28
Message from Principal Groves
Dear Blacklick Families,
Our students had a great day last Friday participating in our last service learning project of the year. The students created goodie bags and cards for the children in the cardiac unit at Nationwide Children's Hospital. A huge thank you to Laura Valido (Blacklick parent and nurse at Children's) who spent time on Friday morning teaching our students about her work at the hospital in caring for young children. Thank you, Mrs. Valido!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are right around the corner on Tuesday, March 3, and Thursday, March 5. If you haven’t already, please make sure you sign up for a time slot with your child’s teacher so we can share your child's progress with you! We are hoping to meet with all Blacklick families on conference nights!
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at 614-759-5100 or by email at grovesk@gjps.org.
Respectfully,
Kristen Groves

Related Arts Update! 1st Grade
PE in Grade 1
First graders have been exploring various Winter Olympic events in PE class. The students have been figure skating (feet placed on scarves), speed skating (feet placed on scarves), freestyle ski jump (running and jumping off of vault boxes), and bobsledding (pushing teammates sitting on top of a mat placed on two scooters).
Library in Grade 1
First graders are reading books published in 2023 or 2024 so that they can nominate titles for the Buckeye Book Awards. This state award is nominated and voted on only by students in the state of Ohio. We want to make sure it’s a great list for next fall so we’re working hard to make some good recommendations.
Music in Grade 1
First graders had a chance to explore xylophone playing! They learned how to play up & down on the xylophones and learned a song to go with the hilarious book “Mortimer” by Robert Munsch.
We are learning songs and playing musical games like “Let Us Chase the Squirrel” and “Grizzly Bear”!
Art in Grade 1
This is Miss. Willmore, Mrs. Perkin’s teacher from OSU. 1st Graders are sculpting and painting their clay cacti this week! After reading Way Out in the Desert by T.J. Marsh and Jennifer Ward, our 1st grade artists are now cactus experts.
Students rolled out air dry clay to create their cactus before adding spines, animal burrows, and texture to their cactus! Next they’ll paint their pinch pots and cactus with tempera paint!
Congratulations, Mr. Gary!
Mr. Gary, Blacklick day shift custodian, was one of 4 GJPS staff members recognized at the school board meeting last Thursday as a Heart and PRIDE Award winner! We appreciate everything that Mr. Gary does to support our students and staff on a daily basis! Congratulations, Mr. Gary!

Blacklick Staff Favorite Things
A list has been complied of the Blacklick staff's favorite things. It is important to understand the teachers are not asking for gifts. We know that many parents might want to get their child's teacher a gift and this list is to help you select something the teacher would like. Please do not feel obligated to buy a gift for your child's teachers/staff members. A thoughtful note from you and/or your child at any time of the year is appreciated just as much or more as any gift.
Staff Shout Out!
Dear Parents,
We invite you to share a few kind words or a heartfelt message for your child's teacher or Blacklick staff member. Our staff works tirelessly to provide the best education and support for our children, and your appreciation can make a significant impact on their day.
Please take a moment to express your gratitude, share a positive experience, or simply say thank you.
Your messages will be shared with the staff member to brighten their day and acknowledge their hard work and dedication.
Thank you for your participation and support!

GJPS District Updates - See Below!
Kindergarten Enrollment Updates (2026-2027)
Kindergarten enrollment dates have historically varied across Ohio, with districts choosing either an August 1 or September 30 age cutoff. At Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools, we have traditionally used an August 1 cutoff for kindergarten eligibility.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, new state legislation creates a single, statewide standard. Children must be five years old on or before the first day of instruction in the enrolling district to be eligible for kindergarten. For GJPS, this means children must be five years old on or before August 20, 2026 to be eligible for kindergarten registration.
Registration for new GJPS kindergarten students for the 2026-27 school year begins February 23, 2026.
