Mrs. Melissa Margrif

by Penelope Spencer

Mrs. Margrif is our gym teacher at the high school and the elementary. In her free time, she likes to spend time with family and friends, jog, lift, play tennis, do yoga, take her dog on walks, and take her dogs on a ride in her argo. She likes going to arenas and stadiums to watch Detroit’s hockey, football, baseball, and her absolute favorite basketball teams play. She also loves to watch Dryden football games on Friday nights.

Mrs. Margrif is married with three children and three Newfoundland dogs. She is also neighbors with our very own Mrs. Torok. Mrs. Margrif also wants us to know, she is the oldest of five kids and the first to graduate with a college degree. Speaking of college, Mrs. Margrif attended Aquinas College and Saginaw State University. She has a teaching degree and a Master's Degree in Education-Principalship. She also ran track and field in college, she was a jumper and hurdler and she competed at a national level.

Mrs. Margrif says the reason she chose Dryden is, “I grew up in Dryden. I attended preschool right across from the elementary gym when I was 3 and 4 years old. Mrs. English was my preschool teacher. My parents still live in Dryden. I was very involved in Girl Scouts and did a lot of volunteer work in the community. These things have enabled me to build meaningful relationships with people from the community throughout my lifetime.”

She says her favorite thing about Dryden is “The people. I would have to say growing up, there were a lot of people within the Dryden/Almont community who gave a lot of their time to help mentor, coach, lead, and inspire kids like me. Being able to come back to the community that helped inspire me to go out of my comfort zone and reach for my dreams has been a blessing. I have been able to be a small part of many success stories of students who have attended Dryden Community Schools over the years. Favorite landmarks in Dryden, the tree behind the elementary, seven ponds, and General Squire Park.”

Some wise words of wisdom she has is “If someone takes the time to encourage you to try something new, learn more about it. Educate yourself and think for yourself. If it sounds like something that will challenge you and put you on the right track toward success, go for it. You don’t have to be the best, you just need to be your best. Later in life bills will start to add up and the worst bill you will ever get is the bill of regret.”

Senior Seminar Speaker Senior Seminar Speaker

Note: Dryden High School seniors have the opportunity to take Senior Seminar, a class offered for the eighth year in a row in conjunction with the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN).

MCAN's mission is to increase college readiness, participation, and completion in Michigan, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students, and students of color. Further, the goal of the College Planning Course is to increase college completion by lowering barriers that prevent students from getting to and through college, including Social Capital, Academic Preparation, College Knowledge, and Affordability. College is defined as the attainment of education beyond high school, including postsecondary certificates and academic degrees.

Weekly guest speaker topics may range from specific educational opportunities to post-secondary life skills as well as the knowledge necessary to be productive members of a community, among others.

Mott Community College

by Jacob Burgess

Gary Campioni came to Dryden High School to speak to the seniors last week. He currently works in the admissions office at Mott Community College, a 2-year college located in Flint, MI. He and his kids attended college or are in the process of attending college, so he had a lot of good information from both sides of going to college. Throughout his presentation, he used a slideshow to give us different information on Mott Community College and college as a whole.

To start off, Mr. Campioni made a lot of good points, but one thing I found impactful was

how he made us feel comfortable if we didn’t know exactly what we wanted to do with our lives yet. He stated that it is normal and that made me feel better about not one hundred percent knowing what I want to do. He did an outstanding job interacting with us by asking and answering questions and using certain people’s desired majors as an example. A lot of us in the class take dual enrollment classes, and he gave us different possibilities on what we could do after high school, such as: since we already have so many credits we could finish our associate's degree quickly at a community college before going to an university, picking up classes over the summer to meet requirements or get ahead, along with other possibilities I found very helpful.

Next, he was obviously very knowledgeable on Mott Community College exclusively,

therefore, he also gave us a ton of information on how many programs they offer, the new facilities for each, and how the satellite campuses have some different programs than the main campus. All of the information he gave on Mott was very helpful and opened my eyes to possibly attending a community college, maybe to just pick up some classes to work towards my degree. He also compared Mott to universities, he told us how the class size at Mott is much smaller than universities resulting in opportunities to get to know your professor and possibly have a better learning experience and he told us they have all the sports teams just like big universities. Overall, he did a really good job making Mott seem like a desirable college to attend and was very knowledgeable on the topic.

To conclude everything that has been stated so far, Gary Campioni not only spoke to the seniors of Dryden High School but also connected to us. His knowledge of Mott Community College and the overall college process was very helpful and gave me a lot of information I can use to better my college decision-making process. After summarizing and

reviewing Campioni’s speech, I wish I had asked him to talk more about the differences between Mott and bigger universities.

Gianni handled the workload we gave him well. Defensively we made some costly mistakes, but there were a lot of good things as well. We are a much improved team from the beginning of the year. I’m proud of where we are and excited to see where we end up."
