Thurston Colt Round-Up
Bi-monthly Student and Family Newsletter
From the Principal
Hello Colts and Colt Families:
Welcome to the 2023-24 school year. At Thurston High School we want all students to have a sense of belonging on campus. Achieving that goal starts on the first day of school. It was fantastic to welcome all of our students to campus! Students had a chance to meet their teachers and other staff. Our administrators and supervision team spent time in the hallways connecting with students and helping students find their new classes.
To support all students, we had extended time in advisory to build community and review schoolwide expectations for different areas of campus. More than 20 student activity groups recruited new members at a club rush during lunch on Friday. And our student sections already show how committed our students are to showing their colt pride at last week’s varsity volleyball and football contests.
School and home are partners in supporting THS Colts. As this year progresses, please let us know if we can be of assistance to your child or to your family.
Tell us how your student’s first week of school went through this survey!
Thank you for being part of our Thurston community,
Go Colts!

School Wide Expectations
Students had the opportunity to learn about school wide policies in advisory. This year we have a focus on attendance. Class time matters. Our hall pass school policy helps support your student in prioritizing class time. Detailed school policies are available in our student handbook.
Chromebooks
Students are expected to come prepared to school each day with a charged chromebook (bring your charger). Students will use chromebooks in class to access class materials and complete assignments. f you are a student who does not yet have a chromebook, please come to the library before school, after school, or at lunch and check one out using your student ID.
Student's Week Ahead
- We hope that your student plans to join us for our first school dance: the Hello Dance. This casual dance is on Friday, September 15th from 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym. Tickets are available online for $5.00 pre-sale.

Attendance Matters
Every day counts. Attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. Students who attend more than 95% of days during their high school career almost all graduate. We will be starting the year for an attendance challenge that will help students get in the habit of being at school, every period, everyday. The competition is by grade level and runs from September 11th through October 6th. Students will get updates through advisory.
Attendance 101: Automatic calls will be made when students are absent. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to proactively communicate with the school attendance office at 541-744-5027 in the event your student is absent or tardy.
Family Resource Center
Thurston High School hosts a student and family resource center. We distribute school supplies, food, clothing, athletic equipment, and more. Contact ths-resourcecenter@springfield.k12.or.us. We accept donations. Together, we take care of our community.
Free Meals for All Students Continue
All students receive free meals on campus this year. Students can pick up a FREE meal in the cafeteria. Breakfast is served before school from 7:35 a.m. - 7:55 a.m. and again from 9:25 a.m. - 9:35 a.m. Lunch is served from 11:20 a.m. - 11:55 a.m.
