May 12-18, 2024

Good morning Cannon Community,

šŸ’ŸHappy Mother's Day to all our Cannon Moms! The beautiful and unparalleled bond of love shared between kids and mothers is honored and celebrated on this day. We thank and love our mothers for all they do!

Let me start by thanking everyone for the generous gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week! We greatly appreciate the love and appreciation you showered our staff with; Our Cannon teachers and staff adore your children! Our dedication and love for this profession drives us toward amazing families to partner with! Thank you for the LOVE and APPRECIATION you show our teachers!

We loved seeing all of our families out on a beautiful Friday to enjoy Field Day! It was a fun-filled day for all, and the weather was gorgeous! Please help me give Coach Maegen Hood a HUGE SHOUT OUT for planning, organizing, and facilitating such a fun day! Our 4th & 5th graders extended the fun on Friday with their last dance of the year. Thank you to our 4th and 5th grade teachers for making such wonderful memories with our Cubs!

We've learned that you really like to take your children home early on event days. Thank you for always understanding that this takes time with our safe dismissal process! In an effort to be more efficient we are going to try a new dismissal process, if you want to take your child home early after their Success Ceremony and Celebration. Homeroom teachers will have a list of approved guardians that may check out students. Guardians will check their Cub out directly from their homeroom teacher by initialing next to their name. Once you have properly checked your student out with your teacher you may leave with them to enjoy the rest of your day.

ACTION NEEDED! If you have not registered your student, please do so by Friday, May 17th!

Make sure to include current your Property Tax/Deed/lease and Utility Bill when completing registration online. Once we have your child registered, we will begin creating 2024-25 rosters. We work with great care to pair students and students with teachers based on personality matches.WE NEED YOUR REGISTRATION COMPLETED!

This is a very important step as we start to create our school rosters for the 2024-2025 school year! As a reminder, Students with completed registration may have the opportunity to keep their device over the summer (some devices are scheduled for a refresh). *In order for your scholar to keep their GCISD device (iPad or Chromebook) over the summer, registration must be completed by May 17. Unfortunately, this does not apply to 2nd graders. Second-grade devices will be picked up at the end of the school year to be cleaned and prepared to give to kindergarteners at the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. Second graders, as new 3rd graders, will receive their Chromebooks at the start of the 2024-2025 school year. See below for more information.

It's also the time of year when we need everyone to resolve their Negative School Lunch Balances

and Outstanding Tech Fees; Help Us Help You!

As a reminder, the last day of school is Thursday, May 23 and is an early dismissal day. We will begin dismissal at 11:45 - School's Out for Summer! Your 2024-2025 Principal Newsletter will begin Sunday, July 21st. Until then, have a happy and safe summer break with your family and friends!

Proud to be your principal,

Dr. Tina Garrett

A Special Note from our Library Media Specialist, Kristi Wagner~

Dear Cannon Families,

This is my 21st year in GCISD! I taught 2nd and 3rd grades at Dove for many years followed by several years at Cross Timbers teaching 6th and 7th grade ELA. For the last seven years I’ve had the privilege to be here at Cannon. I LOVE being a librarian. I love getting to know all the kids from kinder to 5th grade. I love all the funny names they call me: liā€bearā€ian, book girl, and library lady to name just a few. I love being part of an awesome admin team and, best of all, I love sharing my passion for reading and learning. My next big adventure is retirement and moving to the mountains west of Denver this summer. I’ll be close to my daughter and my new house has an incredible view of the mountains! I plan to hike, read, paint, quilt and relax. Thank you for the honor of being your librarian.

Kristi Wagner 😊I've included the view from my deck!

Safe Storage of Firearms

GCISD Families,

Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The following resources will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others about, the safe storage of firearms.

In 2021, 4,613 Texans experienced gun-related deaths. The Texas Department of State Health Services (SHS) reports that 55% of Texas firearms deaths in 2020 were suicides and that 59% of all suicides in Texas were by firearms. Suicide attempts involving firearms have a 90% fatality rate. Restricting access to guns is critical in reducing acts of violence, whether as self-harm or towards others. Acts of mass violence and interpersonal violence often end in suicide.

It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:

  • Failed to secure the firearm; or

  • Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access

The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two).

Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax.

Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com.

Safe gun storage is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies.
