On Friday, September 11, 2026, Whitehall High School students, staff, and local first responders gathered for a moving 25th anniversary 9/11 memorial ceremony. Sponsored by the Social Studies National Honor Society, the service honored the lives lost and paid tribute to the bravery of those who responded to the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

Dr. Mayes opened the program with reflective remarks before introducing guest speaker Corporal Steven Santiago of the North Catasauqua Police Department. Drawing from his personal experience as a New York City police officer who responded to the attacks 25 years ago, Corporal Santiago delivered a powerful address on unity, service, and remembrance.

Members of the Whitehall Fire Department and Whitehall Police Department stood alongside WHS students and staff as the ceremony proceeded with the Pledge of Allegiance, a somber moment of silence, and stirring renditions of the National Anthem and "God Bless America" performed by the WHS Chorale.

Thank you to our Social Studies National Honor Society, guest speakers, and local first responders for organizing and attending a tribute that meaningfully connected our students with a pivotal moment in American history.

District Expectations for All Bus Riders

Profile of a Zephyr Profile of a Zephyr

The Profile of a Zephyr is a graduate profile developed by the Whitehall-Coplay School District that outlines the ten essential traits every student is expected to possess by graduation. These ten traits—adaptable, collaborative, communicative, confident, creative, critical thinker, empathetic, leader, responsible, and problem solver—were chosen to ensure students are prepared for life beyond the classroom. The profile is named after the district's mascot, the Zephyr, which represents a gentle, west wind, symbolizing forward movement and change.

The creation of the Profile of a Zephyr was a community-wide effort. The district's steering committee conducted a comprehensive survey of students, staff, families, and local community businesses and stakeholders. This broad outreach was designed to identify the skills and mindsets that the community collectively values and believes are crucial for success in the 21st century. The feedback was analyzed to pinpoint the ten most frequently cited traits, which were then officially adopted as the core components of the profile. This inclusive process ensured the profile reflects the shared aspirations of the entire community, not just the school administration.

The Whitehall-Coplay School District uses the Profile of a Zephyr to create a unified and consistent educational experience across all grade levels and buildings. We intentionally weave these ten traits into the academic curriculum, social-emotional learning programs, and school-wide positive behavior initiatives to build a common language and set of expectations from kindergarten through 12th grade. This integration helps students become familiar with the traits over time, fostering a cohesive and continuous learning environment. The profile serves as a guiding framework for all educational decisions, from curriculum development to professional development for teachers, ensuring that all efforts are aligned toward the goal of producing graduates who embody these characteristics. Ultimately, we are equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world, enabling them to succeed not only in college or a career but also as active, engaged citizens.

Profile of a Zephyr Spotlight: Steckel Elementary Profile of a Zephyr Spotlight: Steckel Elementary

Incorporating the ten traits of the Profile of a Zephyr is foundational to each building in the Whitehall-Coplay School District. Each month, we will highlight a specific trait and how students throughout the district are exemplifying what it takes to be a successful Zephyr.

Steckel Elementary School recently welcomed The Arc of Lehigh Valley for an empowering "Infusion of Inclusion" assembly. The interactive program engaged students in conversations about embracing diversity, promoting acceptance, and putting inclusive habits into practice every day.

Adding to the excitement, the event featured a special guest appearance by Miss Lancaster County, who joined in sharing inspiring messages with students about kindness, community leadership, and celebrating individual abilities.

The assembly directly reinforced our district's Profile of a Zephyr trait of being Empathetic. By listening to diverse perspectives and exploring how small acts of consideration make everyone feel valued, our Steckel students demonstrated true Zephyr spirit, learning to see the world through others' eyes and building a culture where every student belongs.

A special thank you to the Steckel staff, The Arc of Lehigh Valley, and Miss Lancaster County for bringing this meaningful experience to our school!

Zephyr Zoom In: Zephyr Elementary Zephyr Zoom In: Zephyr Elementary

Here at Whitehall-Coplay School District, our classrooms are buzzing with energy as students take on hands-on projects, collaborative learning, and creative challenges. From STEM experiments to artistic endeavors, the spirit of "We Are Zephyrs" shines through in every lesson, reflecting our pride and commitment to excellence.

This month, our 4th and 5th-grade students at Zephyr Elementary dove into the world of STEM during their Day 5 cycle with our librarian, Ms. Matejcek! The focus of their work was a powerful takeaway: STEM isn't just a subject—it’s a way of thinking.

Students put this philosophy into action by tackling a hands-on challenge with Sphero Indi robots. Working together in small teams, their goal was to construct a complete robot track loop using exactly eight color tiles. As part of the discovery process, students experimented with different colored tiles to determine how each color altered the robot's speed and direction.

The most impressive part of the lesson? Not a single question was asked! Students took full ownership of their learning—testing ideas, making mistakes, communicating, and discovering how the technology worked entirely on their own through trial and error.

Special thanks to the CLIU 21 STEM Lending Library for providing the Sphero Indi materials, allowing our students to engage with hands-on, high-impact STEM technology!

    Dana Mensher, Gockley Elementary School

I am eager to continue working with the students, staff, and families of Gockley. During my 20+ year career in teaching and learning, I continued my own education by obtaining my Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and my Principal Certification from Kutztown University.

I am proud to be Lila and Moses's mom, who are third generation Zephyrs themselves! When I'm not working in the snack stand to help support the kids’ beloved Marching Zephyr Band, I am cheering on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. I enjoy my garden in the summer, movies when I can't get outside, and Diet Coke year round!

I believe in the greatness of our community and I'm so grateful to have witnessed all the amazing changes that Whitehall-Coplay has gone through, not just in my tenure here as a student but also as an educator and community member.

As an Assistant Principal I will help our incredible students see the greatness within themselves and, alongside Mrs. Saylor, serve our dedicated staff and supportive families with love.

    Zach Garger, Steckel Elementary School

I am excited to return to Steckel Elementary for another year as Assistant Principal. Throughout my career, I have served as a fifth grade teacher, instructional coach, content specialist, and administrator at both the elementary and middle school levels. I earned my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Penn State University and master’s degrees in Classroom Technology from Wilkes University and Educational Leadership from Lehigh University. I am grateful for the relationships I have built at Steckel and look forward to continuing our work together.

One of my favorite parts of serving as Assistant Principal is working with students throughout the school day, including during arrival, classroom visits, lunch, and dismissal. I especially enjoy supporting the teaching and learning taking place in our classrooms and strengthening our schoolwide positive behavior expectations. I believe in setting high expectations while providing the academic, social, and emotional support students need to grow. School should be filled with meaningful learning, positive relationships, enthusiasm, and joy.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children, attending concerts, working on my lawn and landscaping, visiting the Poconos, boating on Lake Wallenpaupack, and cheering on the Minnesota Vikings and Penn State Nittany Lions.

I am proud to be part of the Steckel community and look forward to another year of learning, growth, and celebrating our students.

    Ryan Johnson, Zephyr Elementary School

Welcome to the start of another exciting school year! It is an honor to enter my second year as your Assistant Principal at Zephyr Elementary. After an incredible first year of learning, growing, and building relationships with our 4th and 5th graders, I am thrilled to jump back in alongside Mr. Rile, our dedicated staff, and our wonderful families to make this year our best one yet.

For those I haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet, my roots in education began right here in the Lehigh Valley. I attended Bethlehem Catholic High School before earning my Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Special Education from Lebanon Valley College—where I also played football. I later earned my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Delaware Valley University. Before coming to Zephyr, my career spanned roles as an Emotional Support teacher, a middle school Learning Support teacher, a 5th-grade Learning Support teacher, and a Dean of Students. Every step of that journey has reinforced my belief that every child is capable of incredible achievements when given the right support and environment.

On a personal note, I’ve recently moved to Moore Township! Outside of school, my allegiance to the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies hasn't changed, and you can still find me golfing, staying active, or spending time outdoors. This past year, my favorite outdoor activity has been spending time with my Silver Lab, Goose, who keeps me busy with long walks and endless games of fetch in the yard!

As we step into this new school year, my educational philosophy remains steadfast: strong, authentic relationships are the foundation of student success. I am committed to working collaboratively with you to ensure our school remains a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where every 4th and 5th grader feels valued, challenged, and empowered to reach their full potential.

My door is always open. Whether you want to share a concern, ask a question, or just say hello, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your continued partnership! Let’s make this year extraordinary!

Since December 2006, I have served the Whitehall-Coplay School District as Whitehall High School Assistant Principal. During this time, I have had the extreme pleasure to work with the students and staff of WHS helping to provide excellent opportunities for academic success. In my role as Assistant Principal, I coordinate many of the high school’s academic and assessment programs. Whitehall High School offers various programs to help all students achieve their personal best. As we begin a new school year, we once again offer many new and exciting opportunities for students to grow academically, develop personally, and become an active member of the school community.

Prior to becoming a school administrator, I served as a middle school Mathematics Specialist and high school Mathematics Teacher in the Nazareth Area School District. I started my teaching career in the Easton Area School District as a high school Mathematics teacher. I also served both districts as a club advisor to SADD.

In preparation for my teaching career, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Millersville University. I continued my education at Lehigh University, where I earned a Master's of Education degree in the program of Educational Leadership and continued to extend my education at Lehigh to obtain Principal and Superintendent PK-12 certifications. Through my continued education, I have had the opportunity to broaden my background in leading a standards-based instructional program, strengthen my administrative and leadership skills, and gain a district-wide perspective of shared leadership.

As a graduate, musician and student-athlete of Liberty High School, I learned the value of excellence in education and school pride. Throughout all of my educational opportunities, I have held these principles close to my heart and continue to strive to provide students with similar opportunities. As an adult, I continue to enjoy my passion for learning, love of reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

A record of 5 - 1, ranked 3rd after a win over Dieruff. An excellent season so far celebrating its 100th Season of Whitehall Football, with the only loss coming from Nazareth who is currently sitting in the #1 ranked spot. Coach Marino stressed the importance of teamwork and that when we win, it’s a team effort. Great achievements are rarely built by isolated individuals, teamwork multiplies individual talent by turning distinct strengths into a single force. One standout athlete can make a highlight reel, but winning games demands a complete roster where every player completes their roll. Need to highlight a few senior athletes who are having a tremendous impact on the team this year, Iskander Blanco, Tanner Dogmanits, Benjamin Gil, Jeziah Gregory and Justin Heckert.

    Volleyball

A record of 7 - 10, Ranked 9th currently after a come back win against Northampton on Senior Night. Led by Lila Pinkey who had 7 kills, 0 errors and 6 blocks, also Lala James had 13 kills and 13 digs. Another standout athlete is Ashlyn Felker who is the most consistent server on the team, and continuously challenges the opponents. It’s been a great season fighting through the highs and lows. The girls have been improving every week, and we are extremely proud of what they are doing on the court. They are looking to pick up some wins against Allen and Central to try to lock in a chance at the post season. The lady Zephyrs are looking for some student support to come out and rally behind our girls at the next game against Parkland, BE THERE!

    Girls Soccer

8 - 4 ranked 6th Winning 4 of the last 6 games they are picking up some steam leading into the playoffs. Once again they will have a chance at a championship. This group of girls are the true definition of a team. These Seniors serve as the program's anchor, setting the standard for work ethic while mentoring younger players through both victory and adversity. Their true legacy isn't measured solely in wins, but in the foundation they leave behind for future generations to stand on. Shoutout to our Seniors this year which are Kyla Braun, Paula Londono, Cora Musselman, Colleen Sommers, Olivia Tabarani and Kaila Wexler.

    Boys Soccer

The Boys have a record of 8 - 2 - 4 ranked 7th and have solidified their spot in the playoffs after a MASSIVE win against Parkland where Captain Jibril Settles scored the game winning goal. The team then turned around and beat Pocono Mountain East. They have really proven their ability to win high stakes, tough games which will be important in the post season.

Goalie Bryson Taylor has had 8 shutout games, and has been giving up less than 1 goal a game. Team Captain William Quiros Figueroa is leading the team with 8 Goals and 8 Assists. Coach Malone says that the senior class has shown positive leadership since the summer, and are also seeing the benefits of a tough off season hitting the weightroom and drilling the fundamentals.

    Tennis

The regular Tennis season has come to an end where the Zephyrs finished 5 - 11, ranked 12th.

The girls got to compete in leagues, and have won more matches than last year. This is the 4th season for Coach DiGiacomo, and she is so proud of the girls, and how they improved over the years. Lamitta Layous and Elina Daborah came in 4th in #4 doubles, they came so close to a medal. Elena Attieh competed in #3 singles at EPC and unfortunately lost in the first round. October 7th is the seeding meeting, where we will see if Whitehall gets a chance to compete in district doubles. As this season comes to an end, we begin to prepare for the future!

Anybody interested in playing tennis next year, make their way to see Coach DiGiacomo or stop into the athletic office.

    Cross Country

The boys and girls cross country teams have been busy!

On 9/22, they competed against Pleasant Valley, Pocono Mountain West, and Pocono Mountain East at ACC's home course, the Allentown Parkway. Both the boys and girls teams swept all three teams, improving their team records to 4-2. The boys were led by Sebastian Zaiter, AJ Marakovits, Gabe Unangst, Moses Mensher, and Derek Berg, while the girls were led by Marli Jacobus, Isabelle Daigle, Emma Druckenmiller, Holly Kotch, and Emily Slockett.

On 9/29, the teams traveled to East Stroudsburg North to face ESN, East Stroudsburg South, and Stroudsburg. Both teams defeated the two east Stroudsburg schools, but lost to Stroudsburg. The course was very fast, which led to nearly everyone running a personal best by anywhere from 30 seconds to over a minute! The team records now stand at 6-3 for each.

The boys and girls cross country teams then competed in the highly competitive Paul Short Run (Invitational) at Lehigh University. Full results are linked below, but a few highlights:

Both teams finished with the BEST team finishes we have had since competing in the meet beginning in 2023. The boys were smack dab in the middle, finishing 21st out of 42 complete teams. They were led by Aj Marakovits (19:15), Sebastian Zaiter (19:46), Gabe Unangst (19:49), Derek Berg (19:54) and Moses Mensher (20:50). The girls finished 21st as well, out of 30 complete teams. They were led by Marli Jacobus (22:36 - 45th place!), Isabelle Daigle (24:08), Holly Kotch (25:11), Emma Druckenmiller (25:53), and Emily Slockett (28:26).

    Golf

Couldn't be prouder of this team and everything they put into this season. The scoreboard doesn't always show it, but these players showed up every single day ready to work hard and improve. They stayed positive through every tough round and constantly supported one another out on the course. That kind of heart and grit made this a really special year to be a part of. Win or lose, they gave it their all and represented us with true class. Thank you to our awesome seniors Nikolas Christman, Zachary Kresge, and Coltan Tiburzi.

    Cheerleading

The Whitehall Zephyr cheerleaders bring an energy to every game, proving time and again just how incredible they truly are. Watching their commitment is inspiring, as they dedicate relentless hours to mastering their craft. They consistently go above and beyond. Seeing them at other sporting events outside of their traditional football game routine is something truly special.

    Field Hockey

The team has a 5 - 10 record, and is ranked 8th this year led by the Seniors Kerigan Dreisbach, Ava Kneller and Khloe Vixamar Etienne. The record doesn't even begin to tell the real story of this team. Every week, these players pushed each other in practice and fought hard through every single match. They never gave up on one another, showing what true teamwork looks like even when things got tough. I'm so proud of their non-stop effort and the way they stuck together this season. One of the biggest highlights from this year is that Kerigan Dreisbach has scored 23 goals this season! The girls have a tough last few games against Emmaus, Bethlehem Catholic and Northampton. Be sure to come out and support the girls!

    STAR Performers

We'd like to make a special shoutout to our Star Performers, which is a recognition given to someone who has stood out through hard work, leadership, positive attitude, teamwork, improvement, or going above and beyond at any event they attend!

10/2 Football Game vs. Dieruff the Star Performer was Daniela Skvasik and on 10/5 Soccer Senior Night the Star Performer was Alanna Staas.
