School Board Considers Potential 5th Grade Move for 2027-28
At the June 8 School Board meeting, the school board discussed the possibility of transitioning 5th grade to Hockinson Middle School beginning in the 2027-28 school year, an option brought forward by the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC). For the last several months following the February 2025 bond measure failure, the CAC has studied options to reduce overcrowding at Hockinson Heights Elementary School and gathered community survey input. The CAC is also studying ways to involve a steering committee of school staff and families to support 5th and 6th grade students with the potential transition. Learn more here.
The school board will continue the discussion at their July 27 board meeting. We will keep families informed with regular updates via email and Round Up e-newsletters.
Planning Conservatively for 2026-27 HSD Budget Amid State Reductions
In the most recent legislative session, the state significantly reduced Local Effort Assistance and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) funding for schools across Washington. As a result, Hockinson School District is moving TK to a tuition-based model and making some difficult staffing decisions and budget adjustments.
HSD is taking a conservative approach to the 2026-27 school year as the district adjusts to state funding reductions and next year’s enrollment picture continues to take shape. Read Superintendent Steve Marshall’s full message to staff and families here.

HHS Marching Band Goes to Disneyland!
In late May, Hockinson High School band students performed on Main Street at Disney, representing Hockinson and showcasing their talent in front of park guests from around the world. They also stepped into the role of professional recording artists, recording movie soundtracks on a Disney soundstage alongside local Los Angeles studio musician and founding member of the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band, Sal Lozano. What an unforgettable experience!
Retiree Tom Zimmer Honored at 5/26 School Board Meeting
At the May 26 school board meeting, Hockinson School District recognized Tom Zimmer for his outstanding service to students as he prepares for retirement. Tom has dedicated 33 years to education, including the past 10 years as a physical education teacher at Hockinson Heights Elementary School. Throughout his career, he has helped students build healthy habits and gain confidence through physical activity.
Thank you, Tom, for your 33 years of service and for the difference you have made in the lives of Hockinson students. We wish you all the best in this exciting next chapter!
HHES Students with Summer Birthdays Get a Moment in the Sun (and Office)
Thanks to the support of PWT, HHES students celebrating birthdays receive a token to redeem for a book of their choice from the school's book vending machine. This joyous process plays out five days a week, 180 days a school year. However, what happens when a student's birthday falls in the summer months? The school plays catch-up and calls down groups of summer birthday boys and girls, giving HHES Head Secretary Angie Landon the opportunity to hand out handfuls of tokens to happy students.
