Youth Livestock Literacy (YLL) and Youth Horse Literacy (YHL) Opportunities
Youth livestock literacy (YLL) and youth horse literacy (YHL) events are a required training needed to be done for anyone who plans on participating in any of these events for the summer of 2025:

This is an opportunity for youth to increase both their livestock and horse education. One YLL and YHL is required each program year.

2025 4-H Animal Information
Adding Animals into 4-H Online
It's getting to be that time of year! Summer is fast approaching which means that you should start thinking about adding your animals into 4-H Online.
REMEMBER: ENTERING ANIMALS IS A TWO STEP PROCESS.
1. Enter animals into 4-H Online by June 1st – be sure to enter any animals that you may want to show. All animals must be identified, see the tip sheet below for accepted identification in 2025. Green tags and poultry bands are available from the office for 4-H identification.
2. Enter animals into FairEntry. This is how you enter your animals into the Brule and Lyman County Events (HORSE SHOW AND ACHIEVEMENT DAYS).
**Think of your 4-H Online animals as your pool of animals to choose from for Achievement Days and State Fair. FairEntry is where you pick your animals for those events. Just because you register an animal on 4-H Online DOES NOT necessarily mean you have to show that animal come Achievement Days or State Fair.
**Each "show" has its own FairEntry link. Therefore you will need to register twice for Achievement Days AND then again for State Fair if you so choose.
3. OPTIONAL: If you so choose you can enter animals you want to take to the State Fair into FairEntry by August 12th.
4-H Online and FairEntry help sheets can be found here
Leasing Animals
If you are leasing an animal, lease papers need to be completed and uploaded to your 4-H Online profile by June 1. Lease forms can be found here.
Registration Papers
Registrations papers will not be collected in 4-H Online like many of your "older" families are used to. Instead they will be collected during the State Fair entry process in FairEntry.
To be eligible for all Purebred or Registered Market or Breeding Shows (Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Dairy Goat, Breeding Meat Goat, Breeding Sheep, and Swine), 4-H exhibitors are required to upload a copy of the animal registration papers (in their name, farm name, family name, or sibling name) to their entry in FairEntry by August 12.
Registration paper must reflect ownership as of June 1 if purchased.
This will be a required field and if you do not have papers, you will be switched to the crossbred/commercial division.
*If leasing, the same animal owner name listed on the lease form must appear on the registration paper
Market Animal DNA Requirements
You must collect DNA on ALL market animals. The DNA envelopes are available from the Extension Office ($5 each). Envelopes are due to the office by May 31. Each market animal must have an identifying tag number; Green NUES tags (market beef) are available from the office.
Assistance collecting DNA will be given on Monday, May 19 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Brule County Ag Building in Pukwana. Any market animals wishing to be eligible for county rate of gain awards (beef, goats, sheep, swine) must weigh in during this time as well.
