From the Desk of Mr. Hernandez and Ms. Guzman

Dear Gascón Elementary Families,

Welcome to 2026! Happy New Year to our Gascón students, staff, and families. We are incredibly grateful for your continued support throughout 2025, and we are excited to continue working together in the year ahead. Educating children is truly an “all hands on deck” effort, and we deeply appreciate the strong partnership between our staff and families that supports our students’ success.

We hope the winter break provided everyone with time to relax, recharge, and enjoy quality moments with family and friends.

As we return to school, this is a great opportunity to re-establish daily routines. Adjusting bedtimes, setting consistent morning routines, and creating schedules can help ensure students arrive at school on time and ready to learn. After a few weeks off, getting back into the groove can be challenging, but students thrive when they are well-rested and not rushed in the mornings. If you need support in setting up these routines, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher—they are always happy to help.

Please remember to update your contact information in PowerSchool if you have a new phone number or address. If you need assistance, feel free to contact the school office at 323-721-2025.

A few reminders for this month:

  • No school on Monday, January 19, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • Our 100th day of school will be celebrated on January 30

  • Parent workshops through PEBSAF will also begin on January 30

For additional details, please refer to the rest of the newsletter.

Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children. We look forward to working alongside you to ensure a bright and successful future for all our students. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

As always, thank you for your continued support—and GOOOOOO TIGERS!

Warm regards,

David A. Hernandez & Ms. Guzman

New Years Resolutions!!! New Years Resolutions!!!

To go along with the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions, our first topic of 2025 will focus on goal setting. At home, we encourage you to have your child reflect on their strengths over the past year and help them identify areas for growth in the year ahead.

Working together, support your child in setting both short-term and long-term goals. Focusing on small, achievable milestones can help build confidence and create a clear path toward their ultimate goals for the school year.

A Message from the School Nurse

Limiting the spread of germs that cause illness is a shared goal of our school community. During cold and flu season, it is especially important that we take extra precautions to keep everyone healthy. Families can help by following the guidelines below:

  • Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Hands should be washed after blowing one’s nose, using the restroom, and before eating. Please remind your child to wash their hands frequently.

  • If your child is ill, please keep them home until they have been fever-free, diarrhea-free, and vomit-free for 24 hours without the use of medication.

  • If your child has a rash that may be contagious, please do not send them to school. Contact your doctor for advice or an evaluation.

  • If your child or a sibling has been exposed to chickenpox, measles, mumps, or any contagious rash, please notify the school nurse as soon as possible.

  • Please inform the school nurse if your child has tested positive for mononucleosis (mono), strep throat, or influenza A or B.

By working together, we can help keep our school community healthy. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

January Parent Tip: Encourage Goal Setting and Growth

The start of a new year is the perfect time to help children reflect on their achievements and set meaningful goals for the months ahead. Goal setting teaches responsibility, perseverance, and helps children develop a growth mindset.

Try:

  • Reflect on strengths: Ask your child what they are proud of accomplishing last year.

  • Identify areas for growth: Talk about one or two things they’d like to improve or learn this year.

  • Set achievable goals: Help them create short-term steps that lead to a bigger goal, like reading a certain number of books or improving in math.

  • Celebrate progress: Recognize small successes along the way to encourage persistence and confidence.

  • Model goal setting: Share your own personal or family goals to show how planning and effort lead to growth.

Encouraging children to set goals helps them take ownership of their learning, build confidence, and develop habits that support lifelong growth. January is the perfect month to plant these seeds for success!

As we start the new year, January is a perfect time to reset routines and focus on your child’s physical, emotional, and academic well-being. Small, consistent habits can help students feel energized, confident, and ready to tackle new challenges.

✨ Reestablish Routines
After winter break, gradually reset bedtime, morning routines, and healthy eating habits. Consistent routines help children feel secure, stay focused in class, and maintain energy throughout the day.

✨ Stay Active
Encourage daily movement, whether it’s walking, stretching, dancing, or outdoor play. Physical activity boosts mood, reduces stress, and supports healthy growth.

✨ Set Healthy Goals
Talk with your child about one or two personal wellness goals for the month—like trying a new fruit or vegetable, drinking enough water, or exercising each day. Celebrate small successes to build confidence and motivation.

✨ Check In Emotionally
The new year can bring excitement, anticipation, or anxiety. Take time to ask how your child is feeling and offer support, encouragement, and guidance as they navigate new challenges.

Starting the year with these simple habits helps students build healthy routines, resilience, and focus, setting them up for a successful and energized school year.

January SEL Focus: Responsible Decision-Making January SEL Focus: Responsible Decision-Making

User uploaded image

This month, our students are focusing on Responsible Decision-Making—practicing how to make thoughtful and safe choices both in school and beyond. Developing this skill helps children understand the impact of their actions, take accountability, and solve problems effectively.

Key Skills for Students:

  • Problem-Solving: Identifying options and considering consequences before acting.

  • Accountability: Taking responsibility for choices and learning from mistakes.

  • Reflection: Thinking about what went well and what could be improved.

Parent Tip: Encourage your child to talk through decisions at home. Ask questions like, “What are your options?” or “What might happen if you choose this?” Guiding children to think critically about their choices helps build confidence, independence, and responsible behavior.

By practicing responsible decision-making, students strengthen skills that support success in school, relationships, and everyday life.

At Joseph Gascon Elementary School, we are proud to teach AVID strategies in all of our third, fourth, and fifth grade classes. By focusing on academic language, responsible behavior, and higher-level thinking at a young age, we help students build the academic habits they will need to succeed in middle school, high school, college, and beyond.

Each Monday, college flags are proudly displayed outside every classroom, and throughout the year students create projects highlighting different college campuses. Our goal is to provide every student with a strong academic foundation and a clear path toward college and career success.

District-Wide Strategy for the month of January is Critical Reading Strategies: Marking the Text

Critical Reading Strategies: Marking the Text

This month, our district is focusing on Critical Reading Strategies, with an emphasis on Marking the Text. This strategy helps students actively engage with what they are reading by highlighting key ideas, underlining important details, and jotting down questions or reactions in the margins.

Why it Matters:
Marking the text encourages deeper comprehension, critical thinking, and helps students retain important information. It also provides a useful reference for discussions, assignments, and tests.

Parent Tip: Encourage your child to annotate as they read at home. They can underline main ideas, circle unfamiliar words, or write brief notes about what they think is important. This simple habit helps build stronger reading skills and supports learning across all subjects.

By practicing critical reading and marking the text, students become more thoughtful, engaged readers and develop skills that will help them succeed academically.

AVID College Visit: Biola Univeristy

As part of our AVID program, our 5th-grade students had an exciting opportunity to visit Biola University (Bible Institute of Los Angeles)! During the trip, students explored the campus, learned about college life, and participated in engaging, hands-on activities that encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and goal-setting.

This experience gave students a first real look at what college is like and inspired them to start thinking about their own future academic paths. It was exciting to see them ask thoughtful questions, explore the campus, and envision themselves as college students one day.

We are proud to partner with Elevo Learning, a program dedicated to helping students build confidence, character, and healthy habits through engaging and active learning experiences. Elevo combines physical activity, social-emotional learning, and academic enrichment to help students grow both inside and outside the classroom.\

Our Mission

Elevo’s mission is to transform the well-being of students by making movement and learning fun, purposeful, and inclusive. Through structured play, team-building activities, and enrichment lessons, students develop key life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.

What Students Experience

  • Active Enrichment: Fun, movement-based activities that promote fitness and teamwork.

  • Social-Emotional Learning: Lessons that help students build confidence, empathy, and communication skills.

  • Academic Support: Engaging sessions that reinforce classroom learning and strengthen academic growth.

We are excited to see our students thrive through Elevo’s dynamic after-school program, where learning and movement come together to create joyful, well-rounded experiences.
