LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Have you ever realized you’d had a chance to learn about or try to impact something without realizing the urgency at the time? Arleta families and community-- we are at an important moment in Arleta’s future re. “rightsizing” or school closures, and there is a district-sponsored listening session this Saturday at Kellogg Middle School.
Our School Board is in the process of developing a decision framework to serve as a north star in their process. The three listening sessions they are conducting are our best opportunity to provide input into how the closure decisions are made. Please attend a meeting if you can, and/or spread the word about the importance of attending to listen and/or share our community’s experiences and perspectives around decisions that could directly impact our school as soon as the fall of 2027.
The 3 “right sizing” listening sessions, with members of the PPS Board, on this topic are-
This Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Kellogg Middle School
Virtual Option: https://pps-net.zoom.us/j/86256517467#success
Monday, April 20, 2026 at 6 p.m. Virtual Only: https://pps-net.zoom.us/j/82289805530#success
Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 6 p.m. at Ida B. Wells High School,
Virtual Option: https://pps-net.zoom.us/j/82289805530#success
Of the three sessions, the one this Saturday at Kellogg Middle School (3400 SE 69th Ave) is by far the most urgent. On Saturday, at Kellogg, there are actually two meetings on two different topics in one day:
SEGC or “Southeast Guiding Coalition” Feedback Session, Saturday April 11 11:00am-1:00pm
If your family’s boundary was impacted by the SEGC boundary decisions, your experience and voice matters!
This is the only in person session to give input about the SEGC process that concluded two years ago.
“Rightsizing” Listening Session Sat April 11, in person at Kellogg Middle School, starting at 2:00pm,
PPS board members will be actively seeking feedback from parents, caregivers, and community members in attendance.
It is important to note that this is the only meeting that will include discussion about SE school boundaries.
If you can’t attend any of these opportunities to provide feedback in person, you can give feedback on the past redistricting process via this survey link. Please click here for a bit more detail.
Hard decisions will have to be made as the district develops its decision framework. One of our parents attended the March 31 school board meeting and shared some priorities shared throughout, including some that board members highlighted, that neighborhood school members from any PPS school could consider bringing up in listening sessions:
Neighborhood schools should be given just as much priority as other programs – or even more, given the value they serve in the community
Prioritize feeder pattern that will allow students to stay together across elem/MS/HS transitions
Avoiding additional impact on communities that have already undergone school structure upheaval in the last decade
Consider that students of color historically bear a higher level of closure impact than white students
Prioritize safe routes to schools, with compact boundaries and minimal travel needed to schools
Minimize elementary changes that would alter which middle schools the students will attend
Consider the blighting community detriment of mothballing a school building
Consider whether neighborhoods have other community/library spaces and what community role the school is serving
Consider the academic strength of schools being closed and those students are being moved to
Please attend the “rightsizing” listening sessions and share your important voice!!
One more important thing not to miss- our Arleta Art and Literacy Night is on Thursday, April 16th from 5:30-7:00 and should be amazing this year! Please mark your calendars and details below in the Arleta Events section! Our community is vital, and you are a vital part of it.
Warmly,
Lisa Hawking

ARTS AND LITERACY NIGHT FOOD AND PRIZES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Arts and Literacy Night is in one week!
The April 16th event is one of the biggest Arleta gatherings of the year.

Please consider one of the following levels of support:
$15 – Sponsor one student’s yearbook
$45 – Sponsor a small group of students
$150 – Help fund a classroom’s yearbooks
PUT A ROCK IN THE BUCKET FOR ART NIGHT!
We're doing a very popular rock-painting table at Art & Literacy Night, and we need you to help us collect rocks! Find a cool rock? Have a stash at home? Bring it to the school office and put them in the orange Home Depot bucket in the kid waiting area! Thank you so much for your help!
SAVE YOUR BOOKS TO SWAP AT ARTS AND LITERACY NIGHT
Do you have some once-loved kid books around that don't get the attention they deserve? Let's change that!
Starting today April 9th, through the 16th, we're collecting gently used, age/school-appropriate books to be donated to the Arleta Book Swap table. During Arts and Literacy Night on April 16th, students and their siblings will have the opportunity to choose a new favorite book to take home.
📚 We encourage kids who donate their books to include a little note for the next reader.
📚 Please limit donations to 1-2 books per child, keeping in mind that it's best to donate only what you would like to take home.
📚 You can drop off your donated books in the basket located outside the main office.
Thank you for helping us share the joy of reading!

The first graders will soon be working on creating their floats for the parade and we need all your metal jar lids for the wheels...think sauce jars, pickle jars, jam jars, pepper jars, peanut butter jars, you get the idea. Anything that comes in a glass jar will have a metal lid and we want it!
There will be a tote bag for collection set up at the entrance of the main building or you are also welcome to send them directly to Teacher Katherine. We will continue collecting lids up until the end of April. Thank you for helping our First Graders out!

SOUTHEAST GUIDING COALTION PROCESS SURVEY FOR PPS
Over twenty school communities were impacted through boundary changes, program moves, grade level or location changes which began in the fall of 2021. The changes are sometimes referred to as recommendations from the Southeast Guiding Coalition process, SEGC for short. Portland Public Schools (PPS) is partnering with Dr. Terrance Green and his team to learn about families’ experiences in schools impacted by SEGC changes. Dr. Green and his team have worked with districts to analyze past decisions in order to improve both the process and outcomes. We are interested in learning more about how we implemented these changes and how they have been experienced by families.
Your feedback will help us understand the experiences, perspectives, and concerns of families impacted by the changes. Please take a moment to share your experiences and insights in the survey linked below.
Please complete this survey by 3:00 PM Friday April 17.

CELEBRATE HISTORY DURING NATIONAL ARABIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH!
To celebrate National Arabic American Heritage Month, let's enjoy a little history!
Mesopotamia, located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in modern-day Iraq, is often credited as the birthplace of civilization. Help your kid learn about the birth of civilization by watching the two videos, below.
The first is a TEDEd video giving the general story of the rise and fall of Mesopotamia.
The second is about an exhibition at the Morgan Library and Museum featuring women of Mesopotamia and centering around history's first author, Eheduanna. She was the first person to take writing, which had been used for business and accounting, and use it to express thoughts and feelings artistically. She was also the first person in writing to use the pronoun, "I".
Would you like more resources to explore the art and history of Mesopotamia? Click here for a kid-friendly blog-post showing different kinds of Mesopotamian arts and crafts. Click here for crafts you can do with your kids for hands-on learning about Mesopotamia.

Sympathy
I know what the caged bird feels, alas!
When the sun is bright on the upland slopes;
When the wind stirs soft through the springing grass,
And the river flows like a stream of glass;
When the first bird sings and the first bud opes,
And the faint perfume from its chalice steals—
I know what the caged bird feels!
I know why the caged bird beats his wing
Till its blood is red on the cruel bars;
For he must fly back to his perch and cling
When he fain would be on the bough a-swing;
And a pain still throbs in the old, old scars
And they pulse again with a keener sting—
I know why he beats his wing!
I know why the caged bird sings, ah me,
When his wing is bruised and his bosom sore,—
When he beats his bars and he would be free;
It is not a carol of joy or glee,
But a prayer that he sends from his heart’s deep core,
But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings—
I know why the caged bird sings!
Let's Make Art!
JOKE OF THE WEEK
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Weekend.
Weekend who?
Weekend do anything we want!

WATCH THE ARTEMIS II MISSION
The Artemis II mission, after orbiting the earth twice, fired it's engines and reached the moon on Monday April 6th, circling the moon in time to catch a solar eclipse, name new features on the moon, receive a posthumous message from Jim Lovell, and make the first spaceship-to-spaceship transmission. Now, it is a day away from returning home. See photos from the dark side of the moon on NASA's website, here! If your child is curious about the inside of the Orion space capsule, this article will help you compare it to the Apollo capsule. If your child is curious, this page on NASA's website shows engineers and astronauts testing a replica of the Orion module and has lots of pictures of the interior!
When they re-enter our atmosphere near California, around 7:53pm EST, today, April 10th, as gravity pulls them toward Earth, they will be traveling at the fastest speed humans have ever gone: slightly faster than 25,000 mph / 40,200 kph during reentry - over 11 km per second! Apollo 10 reached a top speed of 24,791 mph / 39,897 kph in 1969.
INVITE HOPE: MARCELO FONATANA AND WAVE CONTEMPORARY AT THE COLLINS GALLERY - NOW THROUGH JULY 5
Central Library is transforming into a space for poetic resistance. Marcelo Fontana and Wave Contemporary invite the viewer to see hope as an active power rather than a passive wish. Eighteen artists will create small and shareable acts of hope displayed in the Collins Gallery. The title for the exhibition, Invite Hope, comes from a Maya Angelou quote: “Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay.”
The Collins Gallery, at the top floor of the Central Library, is used for exhibits created by library personnel or by community members in cooperation with library personnel. Use of space by a community organization does not constitute an endorsement of the organization's beliefs by the library.
