The Buzz from Roxbury Village School

What an adventure! As I'm sure all of you know by now, due to a flooding issue at Roxbury Village School this morning, 25 students, 8 members of our staff, and I headed to Union Elementary School in Montpelier for a day of learning. We were warmly welcomed by UES Principal Katie Barea and we all settled into a classroom space on the 2nd floor at UES. Students were able to have PE instruction from Mr. Chandler at UES and take part in an activity with Ms. M and Ms. Casey. Students also had lunch in the UES cafeteria and were happy to enjoy breakfast for lunch with a breakfast sandwich, hashbrowns, and fresh strawberries. RVS students were also able to go out to the UES playground for recess. They liked having a different space and some different equipment to use during recess time. In the afternoon they all headed to Harrison Preserve for an outdoor nature walk and spent some quiet time either writing in their nature journal or reading independently. At the end of the day, everyone enjoyed a little bit more time on the playground and had popsicles before boarding the bus back to Roxbury. Through it all, everyone (students and staff) did an amazing job being flexible and took the day in stride. We'll see everyone back in school at RVS tomorrow!

NO Pokemon Cards at School, Please!

Outside of the Pokemon Club at the Bridges Afterschool Program, Pokemon cards are not welcome at school. Not only are they disruptive to the learning environment, oftentimes disagreements arise over cards that are traded, borrowed, damaged, lost, and/or stolen. We'd like to focus on learning, not resolving disputes over playing cards. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Kindergarten Update

In Kindergarten last week, we had a really fun day together at the Shelburne Museum looking at the Ticonderoga Steamboat, the old school house, the old jail, and the interactive Rig-A-Ma-Jig engineering toy exhibit (open all summer). In the classroom we kept monitoring the chicken eggs, tadpoles, and the salamander eggs. Additionally, we worked on subtraction stories, heart words, reading skills, and opinion writing! Lastly, we are continuing to work on taking care of ourselves and listening to others.

1/2 Update

We had our end of the year school trip last week, with a trip to Shelburne Museum. I am so grateful for the parent volunteers that helped make this experience such a great one for our students. I had personally never been to the Shelburne Museum and was blown away by the beautifully restored and preserved buildings, boats, trains, and many other artifacts from years gone by. The kids had a fantastic time. If you have not had a chance to visit, it is well worth the trip. The kids could have spent much more time exploring.

Speaking of field trips, we had an unexpected one today. I am amazed at how flexible and cooperative all of the students were when it came to suddenly shifting their entire day. They all did an amazing job!

3/4 Update

The 3rd and 4th grade had an amazing time last Thursday at the Shelburne. Thanks to all who were able to support on that trip. We had the chance to learn more about our state’s history from all of the wonderful exhibits such as the Ticonderoga steamboat and the early period homes that Shelburne had to offer. Our time there was short but super informative and fun!

PE Update

It is nice to finally be outside for PE Class. This past month students finished up with our Cup Stacking Unit. Students were timed in the stacks of Rapid Fire, 3-3-3 and 3-6-3. Students were then given a sheet to take home with their best times in each stack. The last few weeks students have been practicing events that will be going on at Field Days. Field Days are June 7th in the morning. Students have also been participating in our golf unit. Students have been practicing holding the golf club correctly, putting and chipping. We have also focused on safety when swinging a golf club. Please remember to have students bring sneakers on Mondays and Wednesdays for PE.
