WECC Celebrates AAC Awareness Month
October is AAC Awareness Month — a time to raise public understanding about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and to celebrate the many ways individuals communicate using AAC tools and strategies.
At WECC, we're marking this important month by sharing a daily tip to support staff in learning more about AAC. These tips are designed to build awareness, encourage meaningful interactions, and highlight how AAC empowers individuals who experience challenges with verbal communication.
A huge shout-out to our amazing speech team for their collaboration with all staff. Your dedication is helping create an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and supported! Great job!!

Safety
The first weeks of school are critical for establishing daily schedules, routines, and—most importantly—safety protocols. During this time, staff have been actively teaching students about our fire drill procedures and other key safety practices.
As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety and emotional well-being, we incorporate two important books into our monthly safety lessons: The Ant Hill Disaster and The Elephant in the Room.
Here’s a brief synopsis of each:
-
The Ant Hill Disaster by Julia Cook
This story follows a young ant who is scared to return to school after it is destroyed in a disaster. Through the narrative, students learn how to cope with fear, develop resilience, and feel safe returning to school after a traumatic event. -
The Elephant in the Room
This book helps children process and talk about difficult or confusing feelings that may arise from challenging situations, emphasizing the importance of communication, empathy, and support within the school community.
By reading and discussing these books regularly, we aim to create a safe and supportive environment where students and staff are prepared.
Upcoming Family Engagement Opportunities
We’re excited to share a variety of upcoming events for families to attend or maybe enjoy together! This list will be updated throughout the school year as new opportunities become available. We hope you'll be able to attend many of the events!
Self Regulation Strategies
About this Series
The Backpack Connection Series was created by TACSEI to provide a way for teachers and parents/caregivers to work together to help young children develop social emotional skills and reduce challenging behavior.
Each Backpack Connection handout provides information that helps parents stay informed about what their child is learning at school and specific ideas on how to use the strategy or skill at home.
