Living History Program Featuring DES Students!

Please mark your calendars for a one-of-a-kind Living History Program scheduled for Sunday, June 4 at 2:00 pm in the historic Monaghan Church Cemetery in back of the Dillsburg Post Office. The program will consist of eleven 4th graders from Dillsburg Elementary who have researched Dillsburg settlers and will be dressed as these individuals. They will tell you the story of their life in Dillsburg and the impact they had on our town. Don't miss this special opportunity to learn more about the early settlers of Dillsburg! The program will be presented, rain or shine, and will be moved inside the church in case of inclement weather.

WES Field Day Fun

Wellsville Elementary Polar Bears participated in their annual field day festivities on May 19th, 2023. Field day focused on teamwork, active engagement, and skill development. They had numerous volunteers from the high school and parents from our community who came out to help. Thank you all for the support. WES had 18 different activities for students, and concluded the event with the tradition of Tug of War: teachers vs. 5th Graders. It was a valiant effort but the teachers reigned victorious! Everyone looks forward to continuing this event next year!

6th Grade Field Trip

The 6th graders visited the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine on May 17th and 18th. Students, parents, and staff traveled into a previously working anthracite coal mine that closed its operation in 1931. They walked around inside the coal mine, learned how mules, canaries, and rats were used, and pretended to set off dynamite. Students also rode a steam engine train and visited the local anthracite museum. Students had a great time learning about resources in our local area.

NES Students Come Together for Classmate

The GR5 students at NES decided to collect coins to raise funds for a classmate impacted by a house fire earlier this year. The students wanted to do something special to support their friend and brainstormed several ideas. After narrowing their thoughts down, they decided a coin collection would be a great way to help. The entire grade rallied behind the collection and in total the GR5 cohort raised $392.10. Students collected, sorted, counted, and rolled all the coins. They were excited by the funds that were raised and the actionable steps they could take to support a family member. We are proud to be a part of Become, Belong, Be Northern.

Bear Singers Perform at Harrisburg Senators

The Northern High School Bear Singers honored our Nation proudly by singing the "Star Spangled Banner", continuing our National Anthem Project at the Harrisburg Senators Game on May 19th to a huge crowd. They also sang a beautiful arrangement of "God Bless America" during the seventh inning stretch. Three members of the group also sang the National Anthem at a York Revolution Baseball game on May 13th, Heroes Night. These students previously represented Northern High School at PMEA choral festivals earlier this year. Great job to the Bear Singers and all the chorus students who sang for the National Anthem Project this year for their service to school and community by showing respect for our Country and honoring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation. Thank you for your patriotism!

8th Grade Field Trip

On Wednesday May 24 the 8th graders took their annual trip to Gettysburg as part of their American Civil War unit and were privileged enough to see what people from around the world who go to Gettysburg see. Our students viewed the “Causes of the Battle of Gettysburg” video then had the opportunity to see the cyclorama…a 360 degree painting of Day 3 of the battle. A tour of the battlefield was conducted by a Licensed Battlefield Tour guide who educated our students on just a small part of the largest battle in the history of the western hemisphere and the reason Abraham Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg.

NES Field Day Fun

Students at Northern Elementary School participated in their annual field day. These cubs had the opportunity to move between 8 stations, practicing not only their physical skills but showing true sportsmanship along the way. We had a fun filled day of popsicles, obstacle courses, parachutes, water games and so much more. We will miss these smiling faces as we move into summer break but loved having the chance to celebrate them in this way!

NES Celebrates Fundraiser Success!

After another successful year raising funds for the American Heart Association, top fundraisers at Northern Elementary were given the opportunity to 'slime' or 'pie' a teacher. These polar bears were able to hit a new goal this year and not only be ranked in the number 2 spot for our region, but also to be ranked in the top 25 for the entire state of Pennsylvania raising over $20,000!! We are so proud of their generous hearts and can't wait to see their continued success!

DES Students Enjoy Butterfly Garden

Students in Miss Gentzler’s 2nd grade class planted a butterfly garden at Dillsburg Elementary. One student, Ava Burrows, who loves learning about butterflies and nature, received the Little Tree Hugger grant. This grant provided the funds for Ava and her classmates to add plants to the landscape that would attract Monarchs, Swallowtails and other native butterflies and pollinators. The class also planted two trees and painted colorful pavers to add to the garden. Ava is hoping to see a variety of caterpillars and take some into her classroom to observe closely. K-Kids and Kiwanis will assist in maintaining the garden. Miss Gentzler and her students are excited to see many butterflies visit!
