PRINCIPAL'S LETTER PRINCIPAL'S LETTER

A huge thank you to our community for all the beautiful, diverse and generous ways we work together, come together and support each other.

  • For creating awesome experiences for our students! Meaningful learning experiences, and joyful family experiences like our Fall Festival coming up this Friday evening! Please sign up to help; it’s a great way to connect with other families and your children in the same space, while serving your community and sharing the workload. Thank you!

  • Our staff are leading your children in learning so many important things. It’s heartwarming and inspiring to see and hear all the ways they are engaged in learning.

    • Around the corner, October 29 and 30, no school for students while teachers have a planning day and a grading day to complete report cards. You’ll be able to view your child’s report card on parentvue on Friday Nov. 6. Here are the instructions

    • Report cards are an important time for celebrating your child’s effort and growth, and ensuring you know how your child is doing relative to grade level benchmarks. If you have questions about that, don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher. It can be very helpful for example, to look at a text that is “at” your child’s grade level, next to a text that is at your child’s current level. Your teacher will be happy to share resources and ideas for supporting next steps (your encouragement and focus on your child’s effort is at the top of the list!)

  • For all the good questions being asked about and processes begun within Rightsizing.

    • Our PTA and the Marysville Family Council have met and are working on some projects together, including a survey being shared today for just our two communities, to gather perspectives from both communities for the SE PTA Leadership Coalition coming up next week:

School Impact Conversation: Southeast | Saturday, October 24th

  • for all members of impacted school communities

Families, educators and school communities across the Cleveland and Franklin high school regions impacted by the proposed Rightsizing scenarios (Arleta is one) are invited to join Superintendent Dr. Armstrong for a School Impact Conversation on Saturday, October 24th, from 9:00am–11:00am at Cleveland @ Marshall High School.

Dr. Armstrong has consistently expressed her commitment to listening to communities, understanding potential impacts and ensuring that student, family and educator perspectives help inform the Rightsizing process. This will be an opportunity to ask questions and share perspectives directly with her within PPS’ ongoing exploration of what each scenario means for students and school communities.

School Impact Conversation: Southeast

📅Saturday, October 24, 2026

📍Cleveland @ Marshall High School | ⏰9:00am - 11:00am

🙋🏾Please RSVP Here!

Other upcoming opportunities~

  • Community Voice: Black Family Conversation at McDaniel HS on Thursday, October 22nd

  • School Impact Conversations for Southeast, North & West Region on Saturday, October 24th

  • Native Community Conversation on Monday, October 26th

  • Board of Education Community Connection on Tuesday, October 27th

  • Board of Education Community Connection on Wednesday, October 28th

  • Link to PPS Rightsizing Website for other conversation dates and all other information

It’s important to understand that whether rightsizing happens or not (status quo option), we will still be facing a $65million budget deficit next year, due to our state funding being short of operating costs, also inflation and enrollment declines. Rightsizing creates savings over time through having to spread staffing positions (FTE) over fewer schools. We currently have over 81 schools; with Scenario A funding would be spread over 67 schools, and with Scenario B it would be spread over 70 schools. Please lobby the state to fund our public schools at operating costs.

We’re so fortunate to have such a vibrant, connected school community! Thank you for your children and your part in who we are.

Warmly,

Lisa

ARLETA PTA'S RIGHTSIZING COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVES SURVEY

The Arleta PTA is seeking feedback from our school community on the current rightsizing proposals. Both PPS Scenarios A and B propose closing Marysville as a K-5 school in fall 2028 and moving much of its school community to Arleta. The other local option, so far, is keeping the schools separate.

This is an opportunity for you to share questions, concerns, potential positives, requests for more specific information. Mixed feelings and a few words welcome. This isn’t a vote. The Arleta PTA will bring themes and questions to PPS and the School Board and share what we learn back with both communities.

The Marysville community is being invited separately to the same survey.

Respond by Sunday, November 1 for our first summary. Later responses are welcome.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to share your thoughts and perspective with the PTA!

THE SEPTSA REPORT ON RIGHTSIZING NOW AVAILABLE

The Portland Special Education Parent Teacher Student Association (SEPTSA) is a city-wide PTSA for parents, teachers, and students working with special education needs. The SEPTSA supports local PTA/PTSAs in engaging special education families and student, provides trainings, purchases neuroaffirming books for school libraries, organizes resource fairs, hosts social events for families, and provides advocacy.

SEPTSA has written a report on how rightsizing could affect students who receive special education services. It covers our questions and concerns about school closures, program moves and how changes would be carried out. Our members voted to approve the report. We sent it to the PPS School Board, Rightsizing Committee and Superintendent on Tuesday, October 20.

TALKING ABOUT SCARY NEWS WITH YOUR CHILD

When big, sad events happen, it is natural to want to shield our child's childhood, so to speak. But sometimes, talking with a trusted adult is exactly what a child needs. Below are some resources to help you talk to your child.

Offering Comfort in Scary Times: After a violent event, children of different ages will have different needs. These age-based strategies can help them feel safer and more secure.
zoom_out_map Show in original size
Ages 0-3: As much as possible, completely protect children from knowing anything at all about the incident.

Ages 4-5 Children may be concerned about your safety or being separated. Explain all the ways grown-ups can keep them safe-- if they're afraid of an event that happened far away, use the distance to reassure them.

Ages 6 and up: start with open-ended questions to see what they know and ask if they want to talk. Listen carefully, and assure them these feelings are normal, and adults feel them, too.

BEAT THE BELL

For the week of October 12-16, we had 94% positive attendance (slightly down from 95% the week before) and 113 tardies, averaging to 22.6 tardies a day (lower than last week's 24 tardies a day).

Getting kids in their seats and ready to learn on time starts them out on the right foot, in sync with their peers instead of starting the day already struggling to catch up. This column will give you weekly tips and tricks for getting to school on time.

This week's tips for getting to school on time:

  • Make sure everything your kid needs for the day is right by the door the night before.

  • Designate turns in the bathroom in the morning, set a timer for fairness

  • Get kids an old-fashioned alarm clock for their room and help them practice using it.

Poems are little packets of creative writing: stories, details, thoughts that quickly and intensely explore little and big life experiences. Reading a poem to your child is a great way to promote literacy and to start conversations about things that your child notices and what's important to them. Each week, we feature a different poem that you are your child can read together.

Toot! Toot!

A peanut sat on a railroad track,

His heart was all a-flutter;

The five-fifteen came rushing by--

Toot! toot! peanut butter!

OVERMORROW: BABA YAGA PUPPET SHOW - OCT 24

Baba Yaga

Sat - Oct 24, 2026 - 11:00am PDT

Magenta Theater

1108 Main St
Vancouver, WA 98660

Tickets $10 Each - Get Tickets Here

Adapted from the children’s book by Ernest Small, this Slavic story of Baba Yaga features a curmudgeonly witch with a taste for bad children, a hedgehog prince who travels through the forest on his noble rooster, and a little girl named Marusia who is in search of turnips. As Marusia and her friend the hedgehog match wits with Baba Yaga, the most marvelous story unfolds with magical brews, a treacherous dragon and Baba’s outrageous house on chicken legs.

Free craft in the lobby before and after the show.

This musical production features some moments that some small children might find scary and may not be suitable for children under 6. A good rule of thumb is: If your child can make it through the scary bits in an animated Disney movie, they will most likely do just fine! We do not recommend this production for children under 6 who have never attended a puppet show before.

Join us at the Holgate library this Saturday from 10am-noon to talk about voting! This is a nonpartisan voter education event where we will talk about ranked choice voting and answer any questions you have about your ballot. It should be fun and educational. Hope to see you there!

WOMENS' TOUR AT LONE FIR CEMETARY - OCT 26

Meet the women at rest in the cemetery. This tour highlights the unique stories and roles these women filled in the community as Portland transitioned from a frontier town to an early 20th century city.
