Day 29/180

One of our focus areas this year at the Jacobs School is math. As I mentioned in last week’s Journal, although we have officially reached the top quartile of schools in Massachusetts, we have no intention of becoming complacent. In the spirit of our One Word, CURIOSITY, we will continue asking questions, examining our practices, and looking for opportunities to get even better. One area we have identified for continued growth is mathematics. While our math scores have remained strong over the past five years, we have not experienced the same level of growth that we have seen in ELA, Science, and even our significant improvements in student attendance. Naturally, that has us asking, why, and more importantly, what can we do about it?

Last year, our staff, led by District Curriculum Director Christine Cappadona, conducted a comprehensive review of our math curriculum and instructional practices. Through this process, we identified several opportunities to make adjustments, many of which were implemented at the start of this school year. In addition, staff participated in math-focused professional development before students even walked through the doors in September. That work will continue on Tuesday as our teachers collaborate with math consultant Alison Mello to further refine their instructional practices and explore strategies that can have a meaningful impact on student learning.

One thing I have learned over the years is that improvement does not always require sweeping changes. Sometimes, it is the small, intentional adjustments made consistently over time that produce the greatest results. Our teachers have demonstrated a tremendous commitment to continually improving their craft, and I am confident that the work taking place behind the scenes will translate into meaningful growth for our students.

We have plenty to celebrate at the Jacobs, but what excites me most is knowing that our best work may still be ahead of us. Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support as we work together to make an already strong school even stronger!

-Mr. Shaw

The Superintendent's Weekly Message The Superintendent's Weekly Message

One of the key points of the new strategic plan for the Hull Public Schools is focused on “Engagement and Partnerships”. The Strategic Objective for this key point states: Foster strong relationships among schools, families, and the community through clear communication, meaningful engagement, and collaborative partnerships that support the success of every student.

Every fall, we host an open house in each of our 3 “schools”. At the Jacobs School, we held an open house for the middle level grades (6 & 7) on a different night than the elementary school grades (PK-5). We believe this fall tradition is a meaningful way the schools engage with the families and caregivers of our students.

As we work to implement our strategic plan, we intend to send short surveys to collect feedback from our families and caregivers. We are curious to know if our efforts are meaningful and have a positive impact on the success of each child. Here is a LINK to a short survey on the fall open house held at each school. Thanks for taking a few moments to provide us with your thoughts and feedback. Even if you did not attend, there is also an opportunity for feedback through the survey.

Community. Confidence. Curiosity.
