Building the Foundation for Coding in AP Computer Science Principles
Ms. Suzy’s AP Computer Science Principles students are taking their first steps into the world of programming through hands-on activities that emphasize clear communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail. To explore how computers follow instructions, students created unique LEGO designs and wrote detailed, step-by-step directions for classmates to recreate them without seeing the original. The challenge highlighted the importance of precise instructions and how even small details can make a difference in achieving the desired result.
Students are also meeting their newest coding companions: rubber ducks! Through a technique known as Rubber Duck Debugging, students practice explaining their code and thought processes out loud to their ducks. By working through problems one step at a time, they can identify errors, recognize patterns, and discover solutions independently.
Together, these activities introduce foundational programming concepts while encouraging students to think critically, communicate precisely, and develop the problem-solving skills they’ll use throughout their computer science journey.
Ideas Take Root
Senior students in Mrs. Harrison's Plant Science class are putting their knowledge of greenhouse structures into action! After learning about the different types of greenhouse styles and how they operate, students are taking on a culminating hands-on project to design and build their own greenhouse structures with a partner. This project challenges students to apply what they have learned about greenhouse design, materials, and growing environments while developing their creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
Fourth Grade Explores the Solar System
Fourth-grade students explored the sizes of the planets through a hands-on math and science project. Using a scale of 1 Cheerio = 3,032 miles, students calculated how many Cheerios would represent the diameter of each planet in our solar system. This engaging activity helped students practice division, apply measurement and scale concepts, and develop a better understanding of the enormous differences in planetary sizes. Learning about space has never been so fun!
