Dear Santa Rita Families,

As the days get longer and the sun finally decides to stick around, we often see a surge of "Spring Fever" in the classroom. While that extra energy is wonderful for playground fun, it can make staying focused on schoolwork a bit of a challenge for our elementary learners!

To help your child finish the school year strong, here are a few quick tips for navigating the seasonal shift:

  • Stick to the Routine: Even though it’s light outside later in the evening, try to maintain consistent bedtimes and morning habits. Predictability helps kids feel grounded when their energy is high.

  • Burn it Off: Encourage outdoor play or physical activity right after school. Letting them run off that "spring energy" makes it much easier to settle down for homework or reading later.

  • The "Final Sprint" Mindset: Talk to your child about the importance of finishing what they started. Setting small, weekly goals can help them stay motivated through the end of the term.

We appreciate your partnership in keeping our students engaged and curious as we head into this final—and very busy—stretch of the year!

Is Your Child Struggling With Focus? Screens May Be Playing a Role

Have you noticed your child feeling more distracted, less motivated, or more emotionally worn down lately? Join one of SmartSocial’s upcoming events, The Impact of Screen Time on Motivation, Health & Academics, to learn what may be contributing to these changes and what parents can do to help.

Tuesday, March 24th - Register Now!

Parents, attend this event and learn:

  • How screen time impacts motivation, mood, sleep, physical health, and school performance

  • Signs that a child may be distracted, overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally drained

  • Simple, realistic ways to create healthier screen habits at home

  • How to start supportive conversations so kids feel understood and more in control of their tech use

We strongly encourage you to bring your child. When families learn together, it can lead to healthier habits, stronger motivation, better routines, and more thoughtful choices online and offline. Register Now!

School Meals

Nutrition services has launched a new payment system through LINQ Connect for LASD families. As a reminder, the Universal meals program provides 1 free breakfast, 1 free lunch for all students on each school day. If a student would like a second meal from the servery, it would need to be purchased, as additional meals are not reimbursable.

Breakfast: $3.50

Lunch: $5.50

Families should create an account on LINQ Connect https://linqconnect.com/main

for their child and add funds as needed for second meals. LINQ Connect is now enabled and ready for account setup.

Trials are underway for JO

The energy on campus is already building as our 4th–6th graders begin gearing up for Junior Olympics. For those who have not yet experienced it, Junior Olympics is an annual, fun-filled, all-inclusive inter-school track meet celebrating 64 years of physical education in the Los Altos School District. Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders from all seven district elementary schools participate in a wide range of traditional and nontraditional track and field events. It’s truly a joyful day of teamwork, sportsmanship, and school spirit. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, April 18th from 8:00am–4:00pm. If you would like to learn more about JO, please visit the website for details. We can’t wait to cheer on our students as they train, try new events, and represent our school community!

State Testing Approaching

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, also known as CAASPP testing, is scheduled to take place between April 13th through May 1st. This state mandated, annual test is given to all 3rd through 6th grade students. The tests are in the areas of English/Language Arts and Mathematics. 5th graders also take a test in Science.

Please keep in mind the following regarding the CAASPPs:

  • Our grade level teams build a testing schedule that utilizes the morning hours- when students are most rested and cognitively awake. For this reason, we ask that your family schedule appointments outside of the testing window, or at the very least, towards the end of the day.

  • There is no “prep” that students need to do for these tests. We would appreciate your help in ensuring your child gets a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast.

  • As a staff, we de-emphasize any pressure on the students in taking these tests. We want them to do their best, to put forth their best effort- but that’s really the extent of the messaging we give the kids. These tests are a way to show what students know and can be able to do as a whole. The results are used by our staff to determine changes to our instruction across the grade levels. The results do not factor into your child’s report card marks.
