First Grade Gingerbread Builders
First grade students recently enjoyed a festive, hands-on activity that led directly into a rich procedural writing lesson. Working collaboratively, the class built and decorated their own gingerbread house. Students then used the experience to write step-by-step “How to Build a Gingerbread House” pieces, applying sequencing, transition words and clear instructions in their writing.
Their finished writing and the class gingerbread houses are now proudly displayed alongside other cheerful holiday learning activities in their classrooms.

Roughriders Ring in the Season
What a performance! After hearing our band and our talented 4th & 5th graders, we’re officially feeling the holiday joy. Thank you to Mrs. Van Der Eems and Mrs. Frederickson for creating yet another magical winter concert for our Roughriders and their families.
Roughriders Rock the Holidays!
Our Roughriders were full of holiday spirit this week! We kicked things off with a special visit from Santa and wrapped it up in our comfiest pajamas. Along the way, students rocked festive holiday socks, ugly sweaters, favorite holiday shirts, and fun accessories. What a joyful and festive week celebrating all of the holidays!

LMS Winter Concert
The LMS Winter Concert took place on December 9th and showcased the incredible musical talents of our students. Under the direction of Mr. Prezioso, Mrs. Faucett, and Mr. Franklin, the 6th grade chorus, 8th grade chorus, all grade level bands, and the Jazz Band delivered a wonderful and memorable performance.
This year’s concert was especially exciting as it was held at Hawthorne High School for the first time. The new venue provided guests with more comfortable seating and an excellent setting to enjoy the evening. Students delivered outstanding performances. The LMS community is incredibly proud of their commitment and hard work.
LMS Den Day Scavenger Hunt
LMS students battled it out during the most recent Den Day by competing in a 20 clue scavenger hunt. Working in pairs, students traveled throughout the building to read and decipher clues, complete tasks, and record answers while navigating their way to each new location.
Two Dens successfully completed the challenge, and all members were rewarded with LMS “Be a Bear” T shirts. Congratulations to Mr. Postolakis’ and Mrs. Bonguara’s Dens for an exciting and impressive race to the final clue.

They showed incredible creativity, teamwork, and growth throughout the process. We’re so proud of the skills they’ve built and the professionalism they demonstrated. Check out their finished films on our YouTube channel!"
Shaping Success in Ms. Hansen’s Geometry Class
Supervisor of Math & Science Ms. Aschenbrand shared, "Ms. Hansen’s Geometry class got hands-on with 3D shapes this week! Students used playdough to model three-dimensional figures and then carefully sliced them with dental floss to explore the two-dimensional shapes revealed in each cross section. It was a fun, interactive way to bring geometry to life!"

Valentina Vargas
Valentina is a kindergarten student in the STEPS program at Washington School. Coming over from Jefferson School (Pre-K), she moved into a brand new school/classroom with all different peers and teachers. While at first this was a challenging situation for her, she adjusted so quickly with a positive and happy attitude. Valentina comes to school everyday with a smile on her face and greets all her friends and teachers with kindness and respect. She is excited to learn and loves to help others. She has made many new friends and she is always cheering them on. During group instruction, she cheers loudly for her friends that are participating. I have noticed her positive attitude spread to other adults and students in the room too. Now, other students are also cheering for one another too! It is truly inspirational to feel her presence in the classroom and it is an honor to teach her and watch her grow. It is easy to smile everyday when Valentina is a part of your classroom community.
