In September 2024, California passed the Phone-Free Schools Act, requiring all public school districts, charter schools, and county offices of education across the state to adopt policies restricting or prohibiting student smartphone use during the school day. The goal was to minimize classroom distractions, support student learning, and improve social-emotional well-being.

Los Angeles Unified School District adopted its own district-wide policy ahead of the state deadline, putting a complete "bell-to-bell" ban on personal electronics into effect. Devices must be turned off and stored away and out of sight in a school-provided pouches. Individual school sites determine their specific storage systems. At Glenoaks Academy all students were given a Yondr pouch to keep their electronic device. If students forget their pouch, they may store it in the school's digital locker, where they create their own password for safe keeping during the school day.
