What did we learn? What did we learn?

Reading

This week in Reading, the students read about what life was like for pioneers that traveled West. As we read, we worked on identifying key details in the text and making sure they connect to the main idea. Choosing key details and text evidence is something we will work on all year as it is a more difficult but very important skill. We also explained how the author chooses specific text structures based on what their purpose for writing is. We notice that the students tend to get problem/solution and cause/effect text structures mixed up, so we will continue working on this.

Writing

Students planned out their letter to the Pioneer Historical Society and began their draft. In this writing piece students are writing to request that two artifacts from their journey be kept in the museum. Below you can see the teacher example for this writing piece, along with the writing checklist that students will be using as they draft this letter.

Math

This week in math, we started off strong with our KLA test on Monday. Our students pushed through the long day to begin our coverage of order of operations by solving isolated equations, and that is where we spent the rest of the week. Whether PEMDAS, GEMDAS, GEMA, or GMA, all the different ways of teaching your student the order of operations are the same at their core (see the anchor chart below). Next week, we will continue applying our order of operations to word problems instead, as we begin getting ready for our Thanksgiving Break.

Science

This week in Science, we continued to discuss how energy transforms within systems. Students learned what makes a system and then identified different ways that the energy changes. We discussed how the parts within the systems function to transform the energy. Our focus was on chemical energy, mechanical energy, light energy, thermal energy, and electrical energy. On Thursday and Friday, we worked on a mini project to come up with examples of energy transformations in our everyday lives.
