Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:

Tomorrow, November 6th is the end of our first academic quarter. Rogers and Thompson parents should expect report cards in the mail in the coming weeks (note that Pell is on a trimester schedule). All parents and guardians at TMS and RHS should have access to their child’s grades in our online system ASPEN. Every day continue talking with your child about school. Talk with them about each of their classes. Which ones are they enjoying and which ones are they finding a bit more challenging? What is his/her favorite class and why? Questions, questions, questions- the more you ask your child the more you will know and he/she will know you really care about school.

When the report card is issued, take the time to go over it with your child. Focus on the good and then discuss how to improve if needed in other areas. I cannot stress how important it is for parents and guardians to take the time to talk with your child (ren). Reach out to your child’s teacher or principal if you have questions or wonders. Your child will start to understand how much you care about school when you keep making it a discussion point every day. Remember your child may not participate in the conversation at first- just keep at it. You will see that your interest in school makes a huge difference going forward for his/her success.

A reminder that there will be no school next Tuesday, November 11th for the Veterans Day Holiday. As a community with a significant military presence, we thank our veterans for their service to our nation and hope you are able to take part in some of the local events…and most important of all, thank a veteran for their service.

We are entering a busy stretch of holidays between Veterans Day, Thanksgiving recess (November 26-28), and Holiday recess (December 22 - January 2). That means we have a lot to cover over the next few weeks before our holiday break. We need everyone every day at school. Attendance Matters, Every Day! So let's focus on being in school, on time, and doing well for all our students/children. AND - this is part of our plan- talk about school to your child every day. Make school and your child’s interest a top priority for conversation at home, in the car, at the grocery store. We want our children to know education is important now and for their futures.

Winter sports and activities are still enrolling. If your child is interested in a winter sport, please reach out to your school’s athletics director to sign the required forms. And if your child is interested in non-sport afterschool clubs and activities, please reach out to your school’s principal. These activities provide a great opportunity to connect with fellow students, learn a sport or hobby, and have something to really look forward to when the school day ends. So I want to encourage all of our parents to urge your child to participate in our many athletics and afterschool club activities. Did you know that some families require their children to participate in one club or sport each quarter? Try it! See what happens.

Finally, I want to give a shoutout to our Rogers girls tennis team who made it all the way to the Division II state championships this past weekend. While they may not have won the championship, they made us all proud with an amazing season. They are champions to us and had an amazing season. Go Vikings!🎾

Work Group On The Possibility Of Moving Grade 5 From TMS To Pell Work Group On The Possibility Of Moving Grade 5 From TMS To Pell

I want to thank the parents, teachers, NSC members Ms. Beth Cullen and Dr. Bob Power for their continued support and work reviewing whether or not the present grade four should stay another year for grade 5 at Pell next September. This past work session we had a guest speaker, Dr. Laura Rogers and she shared her perspective and experiences with the team. Thank you to parent Liz Barron for arranging our guest to meet with us. Our next meeting is November 17th at Pell. At that meeting the group will create a list of pros and cons to present to the NSC for their December meeting so the NSC can decide on whether grade five will move to Pell or stay at TMS. Stay tuned for more information as we move forward.
