Waiting: An Advent Message

Have you ever wanted something and your parents said, “You are not ready yet—maybe when you are older”? I remember loathing those words as a child. It felt like torture. Now, looking back, I am grateful they made me wait.

The act of waiting is a part of life. It is something we learn to do; it does not come naturally. It is a discipline, and some even say it is an art. Unfortunately, there is not much waiting in today’s culture. This could be to our detriment, because waiting is good. Waiting is important—especially for spiritual development. I read recently that one must be in a state of waiting in order to truly appreciate and fully receive a gift.

Advent is a season of waiting and preparation. We are waiting for the gift of God’s Son, Jesus. Be intentional this Advent. Walk more slowly, take in the special moments for a few extra seconds, look people in the eyes, breathe more deeply, be more present. When you do have to wait—whether it is in line or in your car—use the time to pray and notice your surroundings, not your screen. Lean into the waiting. It might be uncomfortable, but I wonder if the gift will be much sweeter.

Kaleidoscope, St. Luke's annual Night of Fun'raising, will take place at the beautiful Botanical Garden's Betty Kelso Center and Greehey Lawn on Friday, April 10, 2026. Cocktail Hour begins at 6 p.m. Proceeds from Kaleidoscope provide St. Luke's Episcopal School with added funds to enhance curriculum, support our dedicated faculty and staff, provide innovative technology and many other valuable experiences for our students. What can I look forward to at the event?

In addition to dinner, drinks, and fellowship, Kaleidoscope has an extra dose of fun - and fundraising opportunities - for all attendees!
