Get ready to turn pages and ignite imaginations! March is Reading Month, and our schools are buzzing with exciting activities to celebrate the joy of reading. Our dedicated building teams have planned a month filled with fun, engaging, and educational events designed to foster a lifelong love of books.

Reading is more than just decoding words; it's about exploring new worlds, meeting fascinating characters, and expanding our understanding of the world around us. This March, we're encouraging every student to discover the magic that lies within the pages of a good book.

Here's a sneak peek at some of the fantastic activities happening in our schools:

  • Masked Teacher Readers: Can you guess who's behind the mask? Beloved teachers will don disguises and read aloud from their favorite books, creating a fun and mysterious twist on story time.
  • Surprise Teacher Readers: Expect the unexpected! Throughout the month, teachers from all departments will pop into classrooms to share their favorite stories, showcasing the diverse reading interests within our school community.
  • Bookmark Creation Contest: Let your creativity shine! Students will design and create their own unique bookmarks, with winners receiving prizes and having their designs displayed in the library. This is a perfect way to add a personal touch to reading.
  • Book-ish Bingo: Middle School students are participating in a literacy style BINGO. Students who get a BINGO are entered into a drawing for a $10 gift card to Schuler Books (donated by the Haslett-Okemos Kiwanis Club).
  • Book Swap: Bring a book, take a book! Our book swaps provide a fantastic opportunity to refresh your reading collection and discover new treasures. Sharing the joy of reading has never been easier.
  • Enjoy the Little Free Library: Take advantage of our community resource! Our Little Free Library will be stocked with books for all ages, encouraging spontaneous reading and book sharing beyond the school walls.
  • And Many More Activities! Each school is crafting unique events for the students, so stay tuned to the school newsletters!

Why is Reading Month Important?

Reading is a fundamental skill that opens doors to countless opportunities. It improves vocabulary, enhances critical thinking, and fosters creativity. During March is Reading Month, we aim to:

  • Cultivate a love of reading in all students.
  • Promote the importance of literacy.
  • Encourage students to explore diverse genres and authors.
  • Create a fun and engaging learning environment.

How Can Families Get Involved?

  • Read aloud to your children every day.
  • Visit your local library together.
  • Create a cozy reading nook at home.
  • Discuss books with your children and encourage them to share their thoughts.
  • Set a good example by reading yourself!

We encourage all students, staff, and families to participate in the exciting events planned for March is Reading Month. Let's make this a month filled with literary adventures and unforgettable stories. Check with your school's newsletter for a detailed schedule of events and join the fun!
