Message from the Superintendent

It has been a tough week for everyone in education -- teachers, staff, students and families -- with the announcement that school campuses in Oregon will stay closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. The Governor made this decision in order to facilitate social distancing in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Not returning to school in-person, while necessary for health and safety, is heartbreaking on many levels. We are incredibly sad that we will not be coming back together as a community for the remainder of this school year. We know and understand that this is difficult news to hear for our staff, students and families.

District leaders and staff have begun working on adjusting plans for events and activities that typically occur in these remaining months of school, and we will communicate these in coming days and weeks. In the meantime, Distance Learning for All will officially begin on Monday, April 13.

It this issue of The Current we have new and updated information about resources and services for our families, as well as notices on other district business progressing despite school closures.

Seniors' Path to Graduation

Distance Learning for All will be happening for all students in 9th-11th grade but things are a bit different for students in 12th grade.

For all of the classes seniors were passing with a D- or higher on their third quarter report card (as posted in StudentVue on April 1), they will receive a P (Passing) as their final grade for the second semester and earn that class credit for graduation. This means that seniors who were on track to graduate and were passing all of their classes are now done with what is required to earn a high school diploma and graduate from Lake Oswego School District and the state of Oregon.

For all of the classes seniors were not passing on their third quarter report card, they will initially receive an I (incomplete) and they will work with their teacher to complete work and demonstrate proficiencies to pass the course. This means that seniors who weren't on track to graduate (by being credit deficient in a category) will be in communication with teachers, counselors, and administration to set up a pathway to graduation.

Earning Pass grades does not affect the overall cumulative grade point average and it does allow credit for classes. It is expected that earning Pass grades in this situation will be understood by colleges and universities as students across the globe are in a similar situation. We will include information about how the pandemic has affected grading statewide in our school profile, and our state is communicating with higher education commissions as well.

Most seniors will have completed what is required. All are strongly encouraged to keep participating in Distance Learning activities in their Advanced Placement (AP) courses until the AP exams. Also, all seniors can continue to receive support on college and career planning from our staff. And, most importantly, we want all to stay in touch and connected.

OSAA Cancelled Spring Season

As a result of the Governor’s extended school closure through the remainder of the school year to facilitate social distancing, the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) has cancelled spring sports as well.

OSAA discussed the potential of shifting spring activities and state championships into the summer. It's board is not supportive of that concept at this time. Concerns included increased staffing and personnel costs for school districts already facing uncertain financial impacts, scheduling issues regarding facility availability, plus student/family commitments for jobs, travel, etc.

Quick Tutorial on iPads Self Service

This is Michael from the CNS department at Lake Oswego School District. I'm going to give you a quick tutorial on Self Service.

Student iPads are centrally managed by the district; meaning, an Apple admin adds and removes apps and configurations for each device. Apps are vetted and approved by the Director of Technology and must comply with COPPA/FERPA guidelines. When free apps are approved, they're placed in Self Service. Think of Self Service as the District's app store. Paid apps are not placed in Self Service; instead, they're installed automatically. If your student is missing an app on their school iPad, please submit a work order here. Thank you and stay safe.

Restricting Access to Schools

At this time, we cannot allow parents or students to enter school buildings. In a few weeks, we will reevaluate and may consider scheduling time for parents and guardians to request access to lockers and desks.

Most district work and functions can be done remotely, but a few essential tasks require an onsite presence. For the safety of our staff and the community, we are restricting the number of people entering schools to essential staff only.

Kindergarten Registration Due May 1

If you have an incoming Kindergarten Student, please click here to register as soon as possible - the registration deadline is May 1.

On May 1st, any school that has more age-eligible registered kindergarten students than capacity will conduct a lottery.
Lottery Deadline: May 1, 2020.
Lottery Tier 1: Applicants with age-eligible siblings currently attending the same resident school will be given priority and will not go into the lottery but MUST register by the May 1 deadline.
Lottery Tier 2: Age-eligible registrations received by May 1, 2020.
Lottery Tier 3: All registrations (including sibling and early admission) received after May 1, 2020 are subject to availability.
Lottery Date: May 6, 2020.
Lottery Notification Date: May 8, 2020.
All enrollments not selected in the lottery or received after the May 1 cut off, whose school is at capacity, would then be automatically overflowed to other schools in the district.
Overflow schools won't be finalized until summer and we will notify families as soon as school assignments are determined.
Most families are enrolled and attend at their resident school and are not included in the lottery process.
Bus transportation will be provided for overflow students.
Early-admission candidates must be assessed and pass the approval process. Approved early-admission students will be placed at the end of the applicant list for placement in their resident school.
Any students who are overflowed for kindergarten will return to their home school for first grade.

Despite school closures, material delays and labor constraints caused by the global pandemic, the LOSD bond team is continuing work already in progress on our school buildings.

Work at Lakeridge Middle School and Oak Creek is moving along and facilities improvements have begun at Hallinan with students and staff out of the building. The bond team is conducting business with extra precautions in place. To read more about it, click here for an update in the Lake Oswego Review.
