PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Atkinson Community,
I know many of you have questions about the Rightsizing proposals and what they could mean for Atkinson. I don’t have all of the answers, but my understanding is growing every day as more information becomes available, and I want to share what I know with you as openly as I can.
Under the current proposals, Atkinson’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) strand would relocate to Lent, and students from Creston would move to Atkinson. These would be significant changes for our school community, and I know families have questions about what they could mean for students, staff, and programs.
I also want to hear from you. Your questions help me understand what our community needs to know, and your concerns are important for me to carry into my conversations with senior district leadership. What I hear from you helps shape the questions I ask and the issues I raise on behalf of Atkinson.
I want to make you aware of several upcoming opportunities for us to talk together:
Tuesday, October 13 — Spanish-Language Family Meeting, 6:30 p.m., Virtual: I will host an online meeting in Spanish specifically for our Spanish-speaking families. I’ll share what I know about the Rightsizing proposals, answer questions, and hear directly from families about their questions and concerns.
Thursday, October 15 — PTA Meeting, 6–8 p.m., cafeteria: The meeting will be in person at Atkinson. I will join virtually and will be available to discuss Rightsizing and answer questions based on the information available at that time.
Friday, October 23 — Principal’s Coffee, 8:10 a.m., cafeteria: We’ll meet again after drop-off. By then, I expect we will know more, and I’ll share updates and continue the conversation with families.
I hope you’ll join me at one or more of these opportunities.
In service to students,
Debbie Armendariz

RUN FOR ATKINSON! — FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16
The Run for Atkinson is next Friday, October 16! All students will have the chance to run and raise money to expand enrichment programming in art, PE, music, assemblies, and more. Check out this great video that our amazing PE instruction Michael Rittman put together. It explains where the money raised goes, how students can ask for donations, and what to expect the day of the run.
By now your student should have received a sponsor sheet. They will get their new Run for Atkinson t-shirt early next week. Make sure they wear their Run for Atkinson t-shirt on the day of the run!
We'll be on the Franklin HS track and Running Club volunteers will count laps that will be included in your student's running tally. Parents are more than welcome to attend and cheer on the students! There will be lively music and more than a few high schoolers joining the fun and rooting for the runners.
- Grades K–2 will run from 9:15–10 a.m.
- Grades 3–5 will run from 10:15–11:00 a.m.
After the run, all students will enjoy Outshine Mini Fruit Pops!
Sponsors can make contributions with a credit or debit card via SchoolPay. Students can also gather checks and/or cash and bring it with their sponsor sheet to the school office. All donations are fully tax deductible!
Contact Ms. Constance in the office with any questions (csanjuan@pps.net).
ATKINSON AT THE VILLAGE TABLE
I'm Sally Foster, Atkinson parent to a 1st and 3rd grader, and our principal invited me to join a local organization called The Village Table. It is a districtwide space that brings together community representatives across Portland. As part of the Village Table, I am working with PPS to ensure our community's real experiences shape the rightsizing decisions.
As your Village Table representative, my role is to listen, ask questions and bring perspectives from our school community back into the conversation. I encourage you to share your questions, concerns and perspectives with me at this email, VillageTable@atkinsonpta.org and to participate in upcoming opportunities to provide feedback.
Please take a few minutes to complete our Community Check-In Survey. We want to hear what you’re thinking and hearing about rightsizing, what still feels uncertain, and what you want district leaders to understand about our school community. I’ll help carry those perspectives into upcoming Village Table conversations.
Atkinson Village Table Rep and Neighborhood Parent,
Sally Foster
BACK PARKING LOT ACCESSIBLE SPACE AREAS
You know to only use a designated accessible space if a valid disability placard or license plate is displayed, but also remember to never park or stop on the diagonal striped lines next to accessible spots. It is illegal to park in or block the striped access aisle next to a disabled parking space for any reason. These zones are required to deploy wheelchair ramps and lifts.
DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We’re excited to celebrate Día de los Muertos on Wednesday, October 28, from 2:30–3:30 p.m. on the upper playground—and we’d love your support! SE Portland 4th grade boys basketball team
Join the SE Portland neighborhood 4th grade boys Goldenball team!
Goldenball is a basketball league operated by Portland Parks and Recreation. The team is looking for 8–10 4th grade boys with an interest in basketball. Whether you’ve played a couple of years and are looking to take the next step in your development or you’re excited to play basketball for the first time, this is a great opportunity to have fun, build community, and learn life lessons through an amazing sport!
There will be two practices a week (one hour each) starting in mid-November and ending in early March. Practices are hosted at nearby elementary schools. (Dates and times are not available yet.)
Games are played on Saturdays, and they start in mid-January and run through early March. They are about an hour long and are played at SE and NE area schools. (Game dates and times have not been announced yet.) The goal is to have a team finalized in early October.
If you’re interested in joining the team, email Adam Ross at adam.ross2@gmail.com.

I wanted to share that PP&R’s Environmental Education department has launched a new program -- the ‘Explore Your Park Series!’ This series is a free, drop-in program for all ages that offers hands-on activities, scavenger hunts, creature features, guided park tours, and more. Events will be 2 hours in length and attendees can drop in to participate for any amount of time during that period. This program will visit a different Portland park each month to learn from and about the plants and animals that call it home.
On Saturday, October 24th from 11 a.m.–1 p.m., we will be hosting an Explore Your Park Series event at Mt Tabor Park. The park entrance address is at SE 69th Ave. and SE Yamhill St, and we will be located near the playground. We will be learning about bats and other creatures! No need to register, just come on by!

EMERGENCY DRILLS SCHEDULE
PPS works hard to ensure that all staff and students are trained to respond effectively and efficiently during an emergency at or near school. Atkinson's emergency drill schedule for the remainder of the school year is as follows:
- Thursday, October 15 — Earthquake and Evacuation
- Monday, November 2 — Fire/Evacuation
- Thursday, November 5 — Secure the Perimeter
- Thursday, December 3 — Fire/Evacuation

- Monday, February 8 — Fire/Evacuation
- Tuesday, March 2 — Fire/Evacuation
- Friday, March 12 — Lockdown
- Thursday, April 15 — Earthquake and Evacuation
- Friday, May 14 — Fire/Evacuation
- Monday, June 7 — Fire/Evacuation
