Dear John Muir Community,

After years of planning, and with input from students, coaches, teachers, families and the community, the modernization of John Muir High School’s gymnasium and aquatics complex is moving into the construction phase.

The gym and pool modernization includes a new 40-meter pool and pool deck, modernized gyms and locker rooms, new team and instructional spaces, improved accessibility, a new entry and lobby, landscaping, and other site improvements. The project was shaped through a visioning and engagement process focused on student experience, athletics, learning, community use, and safety and security.

The trees scheduled for removal at the school are within the footprint of this modernization project and must be removed for construction to proceed. These trees were always slated for removal as part of this project. The plan did not change because of the Eaton Fire. Tree removal will begin this week.

That said, the Eaton Fire created a separate challenge for the site. Environmental testing identified contaminated soil in parts of campus, including areas within the planned aquatics complex. This makes it even more important that PUSD remediate and prepare the site before major construction moves forward.

We know these trees matter. They have given shade, beauty, and a sense of place to generations of students, staff, and the community. Removing them is not a decision we take lightly.

PUSD is taking steps to honor these trees. We are collecting seeds and seedlings from the trees when possible so they can be propagated elsewhere, and are reaching out to community organizations and lumber companies about repurposing usable wood. We will also plant new trees, following the District’s 2026 Landscape and Exterior Space Guidelines, so that future students can continue to enjoy shade and greenery on our campus.

Our goal is to deliver the project that has been planned for years while also ensuring a healthy, and safe campus by addressing the environmental conditions created by the Eaton Fire. When this project is finished, students will enjoy a safer, more modern, and more welcoming gym and aquatics complex, with new landscaping, shade and outdoor spaces.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement for this project.
