Reading
This Week in Literacy: Sharks!
Hello families! This week, we’ll be diving into the text Shark Attack! to guide our reading, writing, and vocabulary work. Students will be learning how scientists study sea creatures and practicing important literacy skills. Here’s what we’ll focus on:
📖 Reading
Ask and answer questions about sharks using the text and photos (RI.3.1).
Identify the main idea and key details in an excerpt from Shark Attacks—The Facts (RI.3.2).
Use text features (like headings, captions, and charts) to locate shark safety information (RI.3.5).
📝 Writing
Study an exemplar paragraph to identify facts, definitions, and details (W.3.2b).
Practice developing our own writing with strong facts and details (W.3.2b).
🔤 Language & Vocabulary
Explore ocean food chain words and connect them to real life (L.3.5b).
We’re excited to keep building our reading and writing skills while learning fascinating facts about sharks!
Math
📢 3rd Grade Math Parent Newsletter
Standard Focus: 3.PAR.3.3
Apply properties of operations (i.e., distributive property) to multiply within 100💡 What Are We Learning?
Students are learning how to use the properties of multiplication (especially the distributive property) to solve multiplication problems more efficiently. These properties help students break apart larger problems into smaller, easier ones.
Why Is This Important?
-
Builds strong number sense
-
Helps students solve problems mentally
-
Lays the foundation for algebra and higher-level math
🏡 How You Can Help at Home
-
Ask your child to show different ways to solve the same multiplication problem.
-
Use real-life examples:
-
“We have 6 bags with 7 apples each. How can we break this into easier steps?”
-
Child might say: “6 × 7 = (6 × 5) + (6 × 2).”
-
-
Encourage using arrays, drawings, or number sentences to explain their thinking.
-
Science/Social Studies
This week in Social Studies students will learn about the US Government and how it functions.

Reading Specialist
Welcome back, 3rd grade students and families! My name is Mrs. Amanda Montgomery and I will be one of your child's Reading Specialists for this year. I am excited to start this school year by getting to know all of your child's strengths and then making a plan to help them grow as readers. Please do not hesitate to email me (amontgomery@marietta-city.k12.ga.us) or call, if you have any questions or concerns. This is going to be a great year of growth.
3rd grade will start their beginning of the year literacy assessments on August 4th. This process will take about 3 weeks to complete and it is very important for your child to be at school, ready to give their best! Thank you for all you do at home to support us here at school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amanda Montgomery
EIP
Reminder: Your student has made multiplication flash cards in class. Please encourage them to study the cards that come home to support strategy modeling in class.
IRR
I am an interrelated special education teacher; I will co-teach in Mrs. Baker and Ms. Castillo’s classrooms this school year. This is my second year teaching, and I am so excited to be teaching 3rd grade again at Park Street! If your child is in Mrs. Baker or Ms. Castillo’s homeroom and has an IEP, I will be their case manager this year. I will be your contact person regarding your child’s IEP needs. Please know that I am here to support your child and communicate with necessary staff information for the implementation of your child’s IEP. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
