The school year is moving along, and it's hard to believe we've already been together for a month. Fall sports seasons are in full swing, and our fifth-grade families are just a few weeks into watching their children learn the basics of a musical instrument. I want to begin by thanking our teachers, who have worked incredibly hard this fall, through the change to our school schedule, to provide an amazing level of care and support for our students here at Lincoln Roosevelt.

At this time of year, it's easy for students to start feeling overwhelmed. Homework, grades, and after-school activities can add up, leading to late nights and tired days. It may not feel like it, but getting a good night's sleep every night really pays off over time. For a growing 10- to 12-year-old, sleep is one of the most important ways to be ready for the challenges of the school year.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, with the support of the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends that children ages 6 to 12 get 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night. That can be hard to manage, but it matters. Research has linked getting less than nine hours to higher levels of anxiety and more impulsive behavior, and some of what we think of as typical preteen moodiness may actually be a sign of too little sleep. Short sleep can also affect memory, focus, and problem-solving, the very skills students rely on in class. Unfortunately, a large national study that measured children's sleep with wrist-worn trackers found that kids this age average only about seven and a half hours a night.

The good news is that a few simple habits can help children fall asleep faster and more easily. Dim the lights in the evening and turn off screens at least an hour before bedtime, since the light from phones and tablets delays the body's natural signal that it's time to sleep. A calm wind-down routine, such as reading a paper book, helps the brain get ready for rest. When possible, have children do homework and school reading somewhere other than their bedroom, so the bedroom stays a place for sleep. Keep phones and other internet-connected devices out of the bedroom overnight. Many families find that charging every device, the grown-ups' included, in the kitchen makes this rule easier to keep. Finally, keeping bedtimes and wake-up times consistent, even on weekends, makes it easier to fall asleep.

If you'd like to learn more, the American Academy of Pediatrics' parent website, HealthyChildren.org, along with the CDC and the National Sleep Foundation, offers practical, trustworthy advice on helping children fall asleep and stay asleep.

This year Roxbury Schools will be acknowledging October as National Bullying Prevention Month. “Five Minutes on Sunday”

Ideas for Modeling and Supporting your Student’s Developing Executive Function Skills

Taking five minutes on Sunday to sit down with your family and look at the week ahead is an opportunity to develop critical skills that all students need to be successful.

In an increasingly digital and fast-paced world, many of our children struggle with time concepts and planning. With a visual calendar, have your family sit together and add important activities such as sports practices, music lessons, visits with grandparents, etc. Are there conflicts? How can they be resolved? Review your child’s homework assignments and offer support to plan for homework completion, with executing long-term projects, and studying for assessments.

Each Sunday ask your child to reflect on the week prior. What do they feel was successful and what presents an opportunity for future learning? What worked and what didn’t? Model your own self-reflection by sharing moments from your week and how you look back to plan ahead. Ask them to describe their goals so that they develop their own vision and self-direct the steps to achieve them.

I wish all of our Lincoln Roosevelt students and their families a very successful school year!

HELP US HONOR OUR HEROES!

This Veterans Day, the Lincoln Roosevelt Student Council Advisory Board is proud to continue a meaningful tradition: our Field of Flags, displayed on the Lincoln Roosevelt front lawn in honor of the brave men and women who have served our country.

Every flag purchased helps make a difference. For just $10, you can sponsor a flag, with 100% of the funds raised going directly to Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization committed to supporting our nation’s sick and injured veterans.

Last year, your incredible generosity helped us raise nearly $2,000 for DAV. This year, we’re setting our sights even higher! As we celebrate our fourth annual Field of Flags, our goal is to add 300 more flags to our display this November.

Each flag represents a story, a sacrifice, and a hero who helped protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. In May for Memorial Day, members of the Student Council Advisory Board will also place flags at the cemetery to honor those that gave their lives in service to our country.

Help us fill the lawn with flags and make this year’s Field of Flags our biggest one yet!

Thank you for helping us honor our veterans and support those who have given so much for our country.

Hello Lincoln Roosevelt students and families, Happy Fall! The air is turning cool and crisp and soon the leaves will show us a beautiful array of colors. We are well into the 26-27 school year and it has been wonderful to see all of our Lincoln Roosevelts students. With school well underway we are starting to see an uptick in illnesses. Being back in shared spaces with many high touch surfaces make it easy for germs to spread. Let's all try to be diligent with some basic practices so we all stay healthy this school year.

Handwashing is the best defense against germs! Please encourage your children to wash their hands for 20 seconds especially before meals, coughing and sneezing, and returning home from school and activities. If soap and water are unavailable please use hand sanitizer.

Avoid touching your face, putting your hands near your mouth, nose, and eyes which are all entry points for germs. Cover coughs and sneezes, get a good night's rest, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and remember to keep your children home from school if they are sick. Let's all work together to build lifelong healthy behaviors. As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns, I am happy to help.

Drop & Go Station

We have created a Drop & Go Station at Lincoln Roosevelt to help streamline the delivery of forgotten items. Please place all forgotten items on the designated table, clearly labeled with your student’s name and grade. We will call your student down to the Main Office to retrieve their item.

Chromebooks

We encourage students who have forgotten their Chromebooks to call home to arrange for delivery. Our Chromebook supply is limited, and devices are prioritized for students experiencing technical issues. Please partner with us by reminding your child to double-check that they have all necessary items before leaving home.

Important Reminder: Student Pick-Up

If you need to pick up your student during the school day, please enter the notification in Genesis under “Add Daily Pick-Up/Release.” Notes entered under “Notify Attendance Office” may not be seen in time.

Picture Day

We are expecting the delivery of Picture Day photos within the next two weeks. All students will receive a proof of their photo. If you have not yet ordered pictures, you will receive instructions on how to place an order directly with BNL.

If your student was absent on Picture Day or would like a retake, Picture Retake Day will be Thursday, November 12th. Our Sixth Grade Class Photo will also be taken on November 12th.
