Message from the Principal Message from the Principal

Hello HSS Families,

It was fun to have so many of you in the building last week. We had a packed Open House on Tuesday and many of you returned for the Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade Sing on Friday. We also had a lot of families join us for the National Bike/Walk to School Day on Wednesday. Everyone seemed to enjoy it despite the chilly weather (See the photo above).

As the temperature starts to drop, please take a few minutes to label your child's winter clothing with their name. This will help us keep the Lost and Found from overflowing.

Our students are finishing up their fall NWEA assessment which allows us to look at how our students are growing between the fall, winter and spring. Once the results are available, they will be uploaded to your child's Alma file cabinet and you will be notified.

Details will follow in the next newsletter, but we will be holding our annual Halloween parade on the 31st at 1:45 on the high school track. Students can bring costumes to school in their backpacks and they will put them on right before the parade. Parents are welcome to come out to the track and watch.

Saturday was one of those perfect beautiful New England fall days. I hope that everyone had a chance to get outside and enjoy the long weekend.

Thank you,

Leah Wheelan, Principal

LICE: Head lice is a common problem among elementary school aged children. The information from the handout comes from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Q: Who Gets Head Lice?

A: Head lice affects all children regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, or ethnicity. It is most common in preschool and elementary school, and head lice is mostly acquired outside of the school.

Q: How does my child get head lice?

A: Lice is spread from close head to head contact. Lice cannot jump or fly; they move by crawling.

Q: What are the symptoms of head lice?

A: Symptoms of head lice mainly include itching (most of the itching usually happens behind the ears and the back of the neck).

Q: How Do I Treat Head Lice?

A: It is a good idea to wash clothes, towels, bed linens, stuffed animals, and hats in hot water and then dry on high heat. You may also seal items in a plastic bag for two weeks. All other members of the household should be checked as well. Please encourage children to NOT SHARE hats, combs, or jackets. It is recommended to start with an over the counter product. Please contact your pediatrician if you have additional concerns.

Q: Does My Child Need to Stay Home?

A: According to the Lebanon School District policy, students will remain in class provided they are comfortable.

Schoolyard Committee

Thank you so much to the volunteer PTO group that worked on Saturday. They put down cardboard and then mulched the paths in our meadow project. The paths will wind through wildflowers and the area under the tree will eventually have log rounds to sit on. The darker mulched area is where bird houses and bug hotels will live in the future.

For more information or to help with the project, you can email hanoverstreetschoolpto@gmail.com or call Tanya on her cell at 910-308-5237.
