West Shore School District's 2026 - 2029 Comprehensive Plan
Comprehensive Planning Update: 2026–2029
Every three years, the West Shore School District engages in a comprehensive planning process to evaluate our programs, identify priorities, and establish clear goals that guide the future of our schools. Comprehensive planning is a critical component of continuous improvement, ensuring responsible use of resources while strengthening academic opportunities and support systems for all students.
The District is currently developing its 2026-2029 Comprehensive Plan. This process includes reviewing student achievement data, assessing district needs, and gathering valuable feedback from students, families, staff, and community stakeholders. Community input plays an important role in shaping the plan and ensuring it reflects the shared priorities of our school community.
The proposed plan was presented to the Board of School Directors at its February 19, 2026, meeting and was approved.

Welcome Mrs. Belinda Ray
Mrs. Ray has returned back to Washington Heights this year as an IME focused on supporting Washington Height's students, staff, families and community. How we can help....
Washington Heights has a Student Assistance Program or SAP team. The SAP team is a group of trained professionals from the school and local community agencies that offer assistance to students who need support for many different reasons. The goal of the SAP team is to help remove any barriers to learning that students may be experiencing. The SAP team will help you find services and assistance within the school, and if needed, in the community. We will provide you with information and you make the choices that best fit your needs and wishes. If you would like to learn more about our SAP team or think that your child may benefit, please contact Mr. Connell.
If any student is in need of sneakers, book bags, food for the weekend or anything at all, please reach out to our school counselor, Mr. Connell. You can message her on Seesaw or email him at jconnell@wssd.k12.pa.us
Message from the School Nurses
How does the flu and colds spread?
Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose. Many other viruses spread these ways too.
What are the symptoms of the flu versus the symptoms of a cold?
In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense.
Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose.
What are everyday preventive actions?
· Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
· If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you (or your child) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
· Students may return to school, when they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine.
· While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
· Your child is permitted to carry chap stick at school.
· Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
Medications:
Per district policy, students are not permitted to carry to school any medications. This includes, cough drops, Tylenol, etc. All medications that are to be given at school must be brought to school by an adult. Please refer to the school handbook, district handbook and school district website regarding the medication policies.
Attendance Information
Attendance procedures for when your student is sick:
You must report the absence within 3 days using one of the approved methods, or they will be marked unlawful:
* PowerSchool: Enter the absence online
* Email: whabsent@wssd.k12.pa.us
If your child is absent 3+ consecutive days, a note from a licensed practitioner or the healing arts is required. Board policy allows 6 parent-verified absences per year; all other days require a note from a licensed practitioner of the healing arts (ex. Doctor's note).
Unlawful Absences :
* 3 unexcused days - written note will be provided and possible School Attendance Conference
* 6+ unexcused days - referral to children & youth and possible court citation
Educational Trips During the School Year
District policy permits up to 5 days each school year. Complete the Educational Field Trip Form on the district website and return it to the office at least 5 school days before your trip for approval. If you have students in other buildings, the educational trip form goes to the youngest student's building with all students and their school listed. Once approved, you will receive an email.
