Social Emotional Learning - Growing PERRIS Super Powers, Together
Mariner Parents, I love our school, do you love your school?!
We are so excited to partner with you as we help every student grow academically, socially, and emotionally. The there are six total SEL Superpowers that we learn throughout the year in order to create classroom spaces and outdoor spaces where every student feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
Personal Awareness will be the first SEL Superpower that is emphasized from August 13th - October 3rd. The six SEL PERRIS Superpowers are: Personal Awareness, Empathy, Regulation of Self, Relationship Building, Integrity, and Self Advocacy.
Our students participate in activities that are organized by theme and our teachers implement the activities into their classroom schedule. Our belief is that by engaging in these meaningful experiences on a consistent basis our students will continue to strengthen their sense of belonging, their confidence, feeling valued, ownership of their learning, and growing their leadership capacity. Sharing this information with you will help to continue the conversation at home around the SEL Superpowers and increase the learning experience in all the right ways for each student. If you have students at other schools in our district, they will also be on the same SEL Superpower schedule as this program is implemented district wide.
And our excitement grows as our partnership with the After School Program means students will experience these SEL Superpowers throughout their entire day, creating consistent opportunities to learn and grow.
Our Wellbeing Team is on campus each day to support our students, staff, and parents every step of the way with the implementation and support of everything SEL, in order to continue to create classroom spaces and outdoor spaces where every student feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
Our families are the best partners in the world and we are always ready to support our students with you each and every year!
Our Wellbeing Team: Mrs. Melissa Ramos, Wellbeing/ELOP TOSA; Mr. Juancarlos (J.C.) Ramos, Wellbeing SOSA; and Ms. Viviann Ramos, Wellbeing SOSA. Our after school ELOP Coordinator is Mr. Francisco Rico, and he will work with after school staff to provide these SEL Superpowers and learning throughout their after school time.
Click on the link below to listen to an affirmation song that is included in the Personal Awareness unit. It is a great resource to use with your student in the morning when waking up, on the way to school, to build student confidence as they begin their day and also as part of the evening routine at home, to end the day with confidence, reassurance, and love.

Our gifts, your gifts, are meant to be shared with others. When you treat your skills as a contribution to the world, you help and inspire the people around you. Mariner Family, keep sharing your gifts.
Music Director, Mr. Chasteen teaches kindergarten students how to read music from left to right, just like they do in their kindergarten class (Literacy). Students are engaged in a percussion lesson and also have leadership opportunities during the lesson where they design the music on the computer and the class plays the pattern that they created.
The W stands for Welcome! WAVE Behavior Expectations are modeled each morning as Mr. DeFrank greets his first graders with a handshake, kind smile and letβs our students know that he is so happy that they are here today and modeling a Welcoming environment!
Our Guiding Coalition Team discusses wow moments that they have experienced during our first seven days of school and any needs and support they might have. We also discussed that our next meeting will include a discussion around the California Department of Education K-5 Literacy Roadmap and how we can continue to grow our daily literacy program opportunities for our students at IHCS.
Mr. Granados and Mrs. Llausas lead a Relationship Building activity with their 7th/8th PE class. Ms. Haynes Kindergarten students are focusing on a story and learning how to read during their ELA time.
