Keeping Learning Going All Summer Long Keeping Learning Going All Summer Long

Summer is the perfect time to build your students’ "background knowledge"—the mental library of information that makes reading and learning easier once school returns. By exploring local landmarks and visiting the library, you are helping your student grow so they can tackle complex subjects in the fall.

Here are five simple, low-cost ways to keep the learning going:

  • Visit the Public Library: Sign up for summer reading challenges and explore activities, or state park passes available for checkout.

  • Be a Tourist in Your Town: Visit local historical markers, parks, or free community fairs to build vocabulary through new sights and sounds.

  • The Grocery Store Challenge: Have younger children identify produce by name and color, while older students calculate unit prices and total budgets.

  • Narrate Your Day: Use "talk-alouds" during household chores or car rides to explain how things work, using specific, descriptive words.

  • Kitchen Science: Follow a recipe together to practice fractions and observe how ingredients change when they are heated or mixed.

Notes from the Media Center Notes from the Media Center

If you receive an email or letter from the media centers about a lost library book, please follow the instructions and resolve it as soon as possible. We appreciate your help returning items so your student’s account is ready for the fall and so books are available for other students. Anything found over the summer can be dropped off at the K–7 or High School offices. Contact the media center with any questions.

Don’t forget to visit your local public library this summer! Libraries are wonderful year-round, and especially helpful during the summer to keep reading skills strong. Stop by to discover fun programs, meet new friends, and check out great books for sunny days and rainy afternoons.

From BEA Health Services From BEA Health Services

Are you the parents of an incoming Kindergarten, seventh grade or 12th grade student? Don’t forget to schedule your child’s immunization appointment! Nurse Crofton sent information home to families in March (kindergarten round up) and in May (classroom visits and letters mailed home).

A reminder that in Minnesota, students must be up to date on all required immunizations or have a legal exemption on file in order to enroll or remain enrolled in school. Immunizations and/or legal exemption paperwork are due by the first day of school. If you want to check your child or family’s immunization records, you can find more information here: https://www.health.state.mn.us/people/immunize/miic/records.html.

Health and Human Services of Faribault and Martin Counties has been conducting a Health Care Gaps Assessment. They have already conducted health care provider surveys, resident surveys, and community listening sessions but are still looking for more experiences and opinions about local health care. Adults are invited to participate in a phone or video interview about your experiences and opinions. The interviews will be scheduled at a convenient time for you and will last about 45 minutes. As a thank you for your time, they are offering a $20 stipend mailed to you after the interview. Please reach out to Jordan Niles (jordan.niles@fmchs.com or 507-618-5546) if you're interested!
