A Few Words From the Principal

We look forward to seeing many of you at conferences on Wednesday or Thursday.

Wednesday evening and Thursday evening are open walk-in conferences. During this time you can come and go as you need. All teachers will be in the gym, commons, or media center. This is an opportunity for you to meet your student's teachers and learn how your student's educational adventure has started this year and the road map of learning for the classes they are taking in a short 3-5 minute conversation. Please enter through the doors in the back of the school by the car loop and bring your student's schedule with teacher names with you.

Thursday during the day we will have scheduled team conferences. This is a time to sit down with your student's core team and discuss your student's learning adventure for this year in a group conference setting lasting 10-15 minutes. These are by appointment only. If you are interested in scheduling a team conference, and your student's team has not reached out to you, then please reach out to your student's teachers to see if they have any times available.

Make sure you stop by the Book Fair in the Media Center when you come to conferences.

We look forward to seeing you at MT next week.

School Fees Now Available to Pay

With the transition to Skyward Q, posting of school fees was delayed until after the year began. Fees have now been posted and are available to pay several different ways - either in-person with cash or check or online through e-Funds (step-by-step guide is attached). If you would like to discuss fees or set up a payment plan, please contact the office and we'll be happy to work with you. Thank you for supporting our school and your student's learning!

All student athletes are required to pay the Catastrophic Insurance fee of $7.63 as part of their student fees. This fee is required by the district regardless of personal health insurance coverage. If you have not already done so, please make sure this fee has been paid ASAP so that your student's ability to compete is not affected.

StuCo Food Drive

Good news! Our food drive for the De Soto Food Pantry is doing well, and we have extended it through Tuesday 9/23. If you haven't had a chance to give, or would like to do more, the most needed items include canned fruit, peanut butter and jelly, ravioli and pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, soup, and boxed potatoes. Donations can be left with students' first hour teachers.

6th Grade Creek Week

6th grade students worked with the Friends of the Kaw to complete a water quality study of our local watershed, Clear Creek. Students complete non-chemical tests, such as turbidity (how visible the water is), the water temperature, and pH (how acidic or alkaline the water is).

The chemical tests were checking the phosphate and nitrate levels of the creek, to see how much road salt, soap, and feces enter the creek water. Students also searched for macroinvertebrates (organisms without backbones that are large enough to see with the eye) by gently kicking the water to scare the creatures into nets.

After cataloging what was discovered, the organisms were safely returned to the creek water. We can tell how healthy a creek is by which macroinvertebrates are present; fish and insects mean a healthy creek and lots of leeches means unhealhty.

Engineering Applications

Students created simple animations in the LEDs of the Micro:Bit using loops to repeat and sleep to pause the code.

We talked about frames per second and used math to calculate how to achieve 10-12 frames per second using milliseconds in the code.

Immunizations

The Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and the Meningococcal vaccine dose 1 are required for 7th grade students. Documentation of Immunizations must be turned into the school by the 2nd Monday of October, October 13, 2025. If vaccinations are not completed, students may not attend school after that date until the required immunization is completed.

Please contact MTMS school nurse with questions.

Please use the following link for USD 232 Vaccination Policy and Requirements: https://www.usd232.org/departments/health-services/policies-screenings

Illness

Please report any symptoms of illness to the school. Please be specific - report symptoms such as sore throat, nausea, fever instead of reporting “ill” or “sick”. Giving symptoms helps with Health Department Reporting and to see illness trends in the district.

Remember students are to be fever and/or symptom free 24 hours before returning after an illness: https://www.usd232.org/departments/health-services/policies-screenings

Seasonal Allergies

Allergy season continues! The nurse’s office doesn’t supply medication for seasonal allergies. Please have your student take allergy medication at home. There are several over-the-counter medications available that work 24 hours. There are over-the-counter-eye drops made especially for allergies also available.
