Last week, we learned more about Morquio Syndrome, which is the rare disease that Kevin in Freak the Mighty has, from Mrs. McCracken. She shared personal stories of her 7 year old nephew who has Morquio Syndrome. The students asked wonderful questions. We characterized Kevin and Max while also reviewing RACE responses. Students happily (not even kidding here!) received their new vocabulary words on Tuesday.

This week, we will finish reading Freak the Mighty, which students have been enjoying. On the morning of Thursday, 10/31, we will watch Wonder, and we will make connections to Freak the Mighty with the shared themes of friendship, empathy, and understanding. Wonder is rated PG. Please email me separately if you would like for your child to have an alternative assignment during that time. Students will also continue their study of Wordly Wise Lesson 2 vocabulary words through a revamped station rotation activity, as well as reading and annotating a non-fiction text. During our afternoon Writing classes, students will be working on Narrative writing. Expect to see some stories!!

Please note - ELA homework is assigned almost every night. If students do not complete homework, I ask that they attend study hall to complete it.

Honors Math -We finished learning the material in chapter 2 last week. The class will have a test on Tuesday. It will include questions using exponents to simplify expressions, divisibility rules, comparing and ordering fractions, converting fractions to decimals (easy to extra work needed), comparing rational numbers and writing numbers using scientific notation. The students should use their notebook and homework binder to practice for the test. We will review in class Monday.

At Level Math - We worked on a project this past week using scale drawings and then took a test on Friday on that topic and similar polygons. Next week we will work on a review of basic fraction and decimal operations in preparation for the unit on percents. We will look at percent models and see how to write decimal forms of the models, along with fraction forms, and simplify the fractions.

This week, sixth graders learned why the earth stays in orbit around the Sun, and the Moon stays in orbit around the Earth. Gravity was a familiar concert, but inertia is something completely new to them. Newton’s First Law of Motion helps explain how things move in space. After watching a video, reading about it, and playing around with these concepts with pennies, they used a simulation to see what would happen without gravity, as well as what factors can change the force of gravity. They were very curious and had great questions and insights. The week after Halloween they will have a test on the first two sections of chapter 19 in their textbook.
