Magnet School Application Process for 2026-27 School Year
Vista Unified is excited to offer magnet school experiences to any interested student. We are fully committed to ensuring that all families have an equitable opportunity to participate in the magnet school application process. Magnet schools are schools of choice that operate within the public school system and offer specialized programs or courses. In Vista Unified, we have five magnet schools serving elementary, middle, and high school students:
Elementary Magnet Schools
Secondary Magnet Schools
For those families interested in one of our secondary magnet schools, the window to apply for the 26-27 school year is January 7, 2026 to February 27, 2026. It is important to note that the window for the middle and high school application submission is shorter than elementary because the master schedule development must be completed by spring in order for all course selections to be prepared for the new school year. Applications for the secondary magnet schools will be available on the Vista Unified School District website starting January 7, 2026.
For families interested in one of our elementary magnet schools, the window to apply for the 26-27 school year is January 7, 2026 to March 6, 2026. The elementary magnet school application window is extended to overlap with the kindergarten registration time frame to provide families with more time to learn about and participate in the application process. Applications for elementary magnet schools will be available on the Vista Unified School District website starting January 7, 2026.
Because space is limited at each magnet school, Vista Unified strives to provide a clear, fair, and balanced admissions process using a lottery system. This year, two magnet school lotteries will take place as noted below:
Secondary Magnet School Lottery: March 6, 2026 for Vista Magnet Middle School, Vista Innovation & Design Academy, and Mission Vista High School
Elementary Magnet School Lottery: March 17, 2026 for Casita Center for Science, Technology, and Math and Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts

Data Insights: Board Goal 3 - Rigorous Learning Opportunities
Student achievement is the central purpose of our educational organization. Our district uses a whole child approach to gather a variety of data in order to monitor the overall growth of our students over time. Our third Data Insights report of the 25-26 school year highlights VUSD Board Goal 3, which focuses on rigorous learning opportunities. Student achievement on the CAASPP and ELPAC assessments are presented to show growth over time, as well as a recent award VUSD has earned based on high performance. Reading Difficulties Risk Screener: Grades K-2
We are committed to supporting early literacy and ensuring all students have the tools they need to become strong readers. Starting this 25-26 school year, all students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade will be screened annually for potential reading difficulties using an approved assessment tool. The Reading Difficulties Risk Screener is a statewide screening program mandated by California Education 53008. These assessments are designed to help educators identify K-2 students who may need additional reading support. Screenings will be brief, age-appropriate, and administered during the school day using the Amira Reading Assessment platform. Screening results will be sent home with your student, along with guidance and recommended next steps if additional support is needed. Please contact your teacher or your school for additional information on the Reading Difficulties Risk Screener if needed.
K-2 Parents: Look for reading screener results sent home with your students on these dates:
First and second grade students: February 13
Kindergarten students: June 4, with the end of year report card
San Diego County Community Violence Action Plan Meeting
The County of San Diego invites families to the upcoming Community Violence Intervention Action Plan Meeting, focused on Gun Violence Reduction in our local area. During this session, speakers will share the final report and findings from the SBCS Listening Sessions, which captured valuable input from families, youth, and community partners about the root causes of gun violence and strategies that can create real, lasting change. The meeting will be held on December 4th from 5:00–7:00 PM at the Vista Innovation Center (VIC), and a free dinner will be provided. Registration information is on the flyer! This is an important opportunity for families to review the findings, ask questions, and help shape the next steps in developing a community-driven action plan for safety and prevention. Your voice matters—together, we can build a safer, stronger Vista.
