A Wonderful Start to the New Academic Year
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we reach the end of a very busy first half-term, I have been reflecting with great pride and gratitude on all that has taken place across our school community. The start of a new academic year is always a time of new beginnings, and it has been wonderful to see our students embracing the many opportunities before them with enthusiasm, kindness and a willingness to grow.
Our Catholic faith remains at the heart of our school life, and this has been evident throughout the term. Our Year 7 and Year 12 Welcome Masses provided a particularly special opportunity to gather together in prayer and welcome our newest students into the Douay community. Our retreats are also now well underway, giving students precious time away from the usual routines of school to reflect, pray and consider their faith, their relationships with others and the people they are called to become.
Our Jack Petchey Award programme is also well underway, recognising students who demonstrate achievement, determination and a positive contribution to the lives of others. These are qualities that we are proud to nurture in our young people and which reflect our belief that success is about much more than academic achievement.
Our Open Evening was another real highlight of the half-term. I was incredibly proud of the way our students represented Douay. They welcomed prospective families with confidence, warmth and courtesy and spoke so positively about their experiences of school. We received many compliments from visitors about our students, and I would like to thank every student and member of staff who helped to make the evening such a success. They were wonderful ambassadors for our school.
Learning has continued beyond the classroom, with Geography trips providing students with opportunities to experience and apply their learning in the wider world. Our Poetry Assemblies have celebrated creativity and expression, while our Year 7 Celebration Assemblies have allowed us to recognise the achievements, effort and positive contributions of our newest members of the school community.
It was also important to see our Catholic Social Teaching values reflected in our Wear Red Day, supporting Show Racism the Red Card. Standing together against racism is an important expression of our belief in the dignity and uniqueness of every human being. As a Catholic school, we are called to recognise the value of every person and to build a community where all are treated with respect, compassion and love.
Our Aim for Excellence Evening and Prize Giving Evening have provided further opportunities to celebrate our students. It is always a privilege to recognise their hard work, perseverance and achievements, and to celebrate the many different ways in which our young people contribute to the life of our school.
There is much for us to be thankful for as we reach the end of this first half-term. I would like to thank our students, staff and families for the energy, commitment and care they have shown. So much of what makes Douay special happens through the everyday acts of kindness, service and encouragement that take place across our community.
I hope that everyone enjoys a restful half-term break, taking time to recharge and spend time with family and friends. May God continue to guide our students, staff and families as we look ahead to another busy and rewarding half-term.
Guided by Faith, we act in Love.

The Douai Martyrs Feast Day
Our school community came together this week to celebrate the Feast Day of the Douai Martyrs, which falls on 29 October. As the school will be closed for half term on that date, we marked this special occasion in advance.
The day began with a special Mass, attended by staff and students from across all year groups, bringing our school community together in prayer and reflection. Following the Mass, the celebrations continued with a gathering where we had the opportunity to share experiences and reflect on the significance of this important feast day.
The Douai Martyrs were a group of 158 Catholic priests from Great Britain who were executed between 1577 and 1680 for remaining steadfast in their faith. These courageous men had studied at the English College in Douai, France, where they were trained to provide spiritual and pastoral care to Catholics in England during a time of great persecution.
Their dedication to their mission, despite the dangers they faced, has left an enduring legacy of faith, courage and sacrifice. In 1929, Pope Pius XI beatified 80 of these former students of Douai College in recognition of their faith and martyrdom.
The Feast Day of the Douai Martyrs holds special significance for our school, reminding us of the values of faith, courage and resilience that continue to inspire our school community today.
We wish everyone in our school community a blessed and happy Feast Day of the Douai Martyrs.

Our Year 10 students recently took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, an exciting opportunity to develop their public speaking, communication and confidence.
The whole year group did an outstanding job, with so many fantastic speakers sharing their ideas and finding their voices. We are delighted to have selected nine school finalists, who will compete in our school final after half-term. The overall winner will then go on to represent St Bon’s at the Regional Final of the Speak Out Challenge.

We are committed to ensuring that every student feels safe, supported and valued, with access to the guidance and encouragement they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Author Visit
We were delighted to welcome Hon Dr Stuart Lawrence to our school today.
He spoke to Years 7, 8 and 9 during assemblies, encouraging students to engage more actively with reading and creative writing.
He had many insightful ideas, but one that really resonated with our students was that life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it. As a community, we came together to consider the power we have to inspire change and tolerance in the world, and Stuart encouraged us to contribute to a world with 'HOPE' - one where we at least Help One Person Every day.
New Year 7
Our new Year 7 students have made a fantastic start to life at our school. They are settling in well, discovering our school values and building new friendships as they begin this exciting chapter of their educational journey.
We pray that God guides and blesses them throughout the year ahead, helping them grow in faith, knowledge and confidence as valued members of our school community.
Production Rehearsals
Rehearsals are officially underway for our upcoming school production of Hairspray. Our students have been getting to know their roles, learning more about their characters and taking their first exciting steps into rehearsals. There is already plenty of energy, enthusiasm and teamwork as the cast begins bringing this much-loved musical to life.
We can’t wait to share more behind-the-scenes updates. Stay tuned for more information, including the confirmed production dates.
Thank you, Mrs Doyle
Our school community extends its heartfelt thanks to Mrs Doyle, our School Governance Officer, Clerk and Business Manager, for her dedicated service to the school for over 35 years.
As a valued member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), Mrs Doyle has played an important role in our school’s journey, contributing to its development and overseeing many significant projects. We wish her continued good health, happiness and every success for the future.
National Poetry Day
This year’s National Poetry Day theme was “Wonder: It’s a Wonderful World of Wonder.” In our school, we celebrated National Poetry Day 2026 with writing and reading poetry in Form Time and in Departments.
Our Senior Elite Readers embraced the theme by creating original poems and research poems exploring the many forms of wonder and the wonderful gift of creativity. Mrs Rizava and selected Senior Elite Readers delivered assemblies to Years 7-11. Their work celebrated creation and creativity through Music, Books, Dreams, and journeys of self-discovery, reflecting on the ways these experiences can inspire, transform and open our minds to new possibilities.
Two poems also explored the importance of preserving our wonderful world, highlighting the devastating impact of conflict and reminding us of our responsibility to protect the world we share. Through their poetry, our students have shown imagination, curiosity and a deep appreciation for the creativity and wonder that surround us.
Catholic Life
Catholic Life at Douay – A Term of Faith, Friendship and Celebration
As we reflect on a busy and fulfilling term, we are delighted to share some of the wonderful opportunities our students have had to grow in faith, strengthen friendships and come together as a Catholic school community.
Welcome Mass – Beginning a New Journey Together
We began the term with a beautiful Welcome Mass, attended by our Year 7 and Year 12 students, alongside their form tutors and families. It was a joyful and meaningful celebration, bringing us together in prayer as we marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our students' lives.
For our Year 7 students, the Mass was a special opportunity to welcome them and their families into the Douay community as they begin their secondary school journey. For our Year 12 students, it marked the start of a new and important stage as they embark on their A-level studies and begin to consider their future pathways, whether through university, apprenticeships or other opportunities beyond Douay.
It was a wonderful occasion to remind our students that, wherever their journey may lead, they are supported by a caring school community, rooted in faith and guided by God's love.
Year 7 Retreats – Growing in Faith and Friendship
As part of our commitment to nurturing the Catholic Life and spiritual development of our students, all Year 7 students are offered the opportunity to participate in a retreat to Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Ruislip.
Throughout the day, students explored their relationships with God, their families and their friends. They reflected on the importance of kindness, trust, respect and forgiveness, considering what makes a good friendship and how they can be good friends to others. The retreats were thoroughly enjoyed by the students and provided a wonderful opportunity to strengthen friendships, deepen their understanding of their faith and reflect on how they can live out Gospel values in their everyday lives.
Year 7 Chapel Tours – Faith in Action
Our Year 7 students also had the opportunity to take part in guided tours of the school chapel, led by members of our Student Catholic Life Committee. Our student leaders did a fantastic job of welcoming and engaging the Year 7 students, helping them to explore the chapel, understand its significance and appreciate its importance as a sacred space at the heart of our school community.
It was particularly inspiring to see our older students confidently sharing their knowledge and witnessing to their faith. They were wonderful role models, demonstrating leadership, service and a genuine commitment to the Catholic life of our school. The Year 7 students participated enthusiastically and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We are very proud of our Catholic Life Committee members for the care, enthusiasm and dedication they showed.
Celebrating Our Patronal Feast Day – The Douay Martyrs
We brought the term to a fitting and prayerful close by coming together as a school community to celebrate our Patronal Feast Day, honouring the Douay Martyrs, whose feast day falls on 29th October. The Douay Martyrs were 158 Catholic priests who trained at Douai in France and gave their lives as witnesses to their faith during a time of religious persecution. Their extraordinary courage, unwavering faith, resilience and dedication to serving God and others continue to inspire us today.
As a school proudly bearing their name, this celebration is a particularly meaningful occasion. It reminds us of the importance of standing firm in our beliefs, living with courage and compassion, and putting our faith into action through service to others. Our Patronal Masses were a beautiful expression of our shared faith and identity as a Catholic community.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Canon Nicholas Schofield for celebrating the Masses with us, and to Mr Swindell and our school choir, whose beautiful singing enriched our celebrations and helped create such a prayerful atmosphere.
We are also extremely grateful to our altar servers, readers and members of the Student Catholic Life Committee, who generously gave their time to prepare, organise and support the Masses. Their contributions helped make the celebrations truly special.
A special thank you also goes to our wonderful Site Team, whose hard work behind the scenes in preparing and setting up the spaces for our celebrations, and ensuring everything ran smoothly, was greatly appreciated. Their dedication and support helped make these occasions so special for our whole school community.

Prayer to Pope Leo XIV
Our school community continues to hold Pope Leo XIV in our prayers as he recovers from his recent surgery. We pray that God grants our Holy Father strength, comfort and a full recovery, renewing his health as he continues his mission of faith, service and leadership within the Catholic Church.
May the Lord surround Pope Leo XIV with His healing love and mercy, sustain him through his recovery and guide him in the days ahead. United in faith with Catholics around the world, we ask God to bless and protect our Holy Father, granting him peace, renewed strength and good health.
“The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.” — Psalm 41:3
