Haitian Dance Troupe Electrifies Revere Elementary School Students
Jean Appolon of Jean Appolon Expressions leads the dance class at the Paul Revere School
With the beat of the Congo drums echoing inside the gym at Paul Revere Elementary School, students could not resist moving to the beat.
Last Friday, led by dancers from Jean Appolon Expressions (JAE), a Cambridge-based dance troupe that teaches and performs traditional Haitian folkloric dance, students at the Paul Revere School learned some impressive dance moves.
“We have two teachers who are familiar with the group,” said Paul Revere School Principal Maurice Coyle. “Both of them have actually participated in their dance classes outside of school and knew they would be a great experience for our students."
JAE is a contemporary dance company deeply rooted in Haitian folkloric culture that celebrates, nurtures, and empowers a global community. JAE accomplishes this through professional performances, teaching, and fostering healing and the joy of movement in people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to contribute to a socially just world.
Beachmont School, Northeastern University Team Up for STEAM
Northeastern University Students with Beachmont Students during a recent Pop-Up STEAM Museum
Something really special is happening every Friday at the Beachmont School. Each Friday from 2:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., around twenty Beachmont fourth and fifth graders take part in a STEAM (Science, Technology, Art and Math) afterschool club with freshman from Northeastern University’s School of Engineering.
At a time when most kids want to run out of the school building to start their weekend, these Beachmont students have become totally immersed in STEAM activities with the Northeastern students—and they love it.
Beachmont’s STEAM Director, Christiane Amstutz, explained that the partnership began five years ago, and after some trial and error, the STEAM after-school club has become a success.
Dr. Wornum, RPS Families Discuss Becoming a Culturally Proficient Caregiver
Dr. Kalise Wornum of KW Diversity, Inc.
Revere Public Schools Assistant Superintendent of Equity and Inclusion Dr. Lourenço Garcia is pleased to announce that a group of caregivers, community members and teachers recently engaged in a discussion on cultural proficiency with well-known speaker Dr. Kalise Wornum of KW Diversity, Inc.
Dr. Wornum, a nationally sought-after keynote speaker, educational leader, workshop facilitator, and author in the area of anti-racist education and cultural proficiency, led the December workshop that emphasized the importance of being open-minded and accepting when it comes to cultural proficiency.
“The minute we start talking to each other, we realize everybody brings something different to the table,” said Dr. Wornum. “If we're trying to be a more equitable school district, we all need to be on the same bus and learn from each other’s experiences, trauma or diversity.”
