emPOWERed # Harloe 5
Hello Harloe Families,
I wanted to give you some information on how we are teaching our students about how to stand up and prevent bullying. We have included lessons on how students can react if they find themselves in a situation where they (or another student) is experiencing bullying. This work has been lead by our fabulous school councelor Mrs. Gulino with support from Mrs. Neal (one of our TOSA who focuses on student support) and our teachers. I am so proud of their work and the response from our students!
What is emPOWERed?
The emPOWERed program focuses on the dynamics of "power." Recently, our 4th through 6th-grade students participated in two intensive assemblies where we explored the difference between using power over others versus using power in a postive way.
During these sessions, students:
Analyzed various bullying scenarios.
Discussed the emotional impact of negative power.
Debriefed in small groups to share personal experiences.
Learned how to stand strong both individually and as a united "Harloe Family."
The #Harloe 5
To give students a clear "playbook" for handling difficult situations, we have introduced the #Harloe 5. These are five specific, age-appropriate ways to say "no" to bullying:
Ignore: Don’t give the behavior an audience.
Talk Kindly: Use a soft response to de-escalate.
Walk Away: Remove yourself from the situation.
Talk Firmly: Use a clear, assertive voice to set a boundary.
Report to an Adult: Seek help from a trusted teacher or staff member.
What’s Next?
For 4th-6th Graders: To commemorate their commitment, each student will receive a special emPOWERed keychain. This serves as a daily reminder of their strength and the #Harloe 5 strategies.
For 1st-3rd Graders: We are currently developing an age-appropriate version of this program tailored specifically for our younger learners. Stay tuned for more details soon!
Our Goal: We want our students to know that they are never alone and that they have the power to increase the positive culture of Harloe.
We encourage you to ask your child about the #Harloe 5 and what being "emPOWERed" means to them. Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our school a kind and safe place to learn.
Warmly,
Mrs. Webster
