Forest Elementary Newsletter January

Forest families,

As our winter break approaches, I wanted to take a minute to tell each and every one of you “Happy Holidays”. I hope that you enjoy making memories with your family and friends this holiday season. I am grateful for all of the families, students, and staff of Forest Elementary. Your support and kindness are what make this school a wonderful place to be!

Thank you to all of our volunteers that have made our fun events possible this season. Parent Club planned and hosted our Rev’d Up Fun event in November, the Santa Secret Shop this past week, and also the Gingerbread Jingle in December. All events went well, and our students and families had a blast! Thank you to parent club and all of our volunteers that made all of this possible.

Since the weather is now very cold, please make sure that your child comes to school properly dressed for the weather. Please make sure your child brings cold weather gear such as gloves, hats, earmuffs, scarves, etc. for morning and recess. The students will be going outside for recess up to three times per day.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, call the office at (734) 479-2550 or email myself (gmeli@riverviewschools.com) or Ms. Annie (aprusakiewicz@riverviewschools.com).

Happy Holidays!

Gianina Meli

Response to Intervention (RTI) push-in lessons Response to Intervention (RTI) push-in lessons

This year at Forest Elementary School, we have started doing Response to Intervention (RTI) push-in lessons to address early language development skills in the kindergarten classrooms. Speech push-in lessons integrate speech therapy into the curriculum, allowing speech-language pathologists to target language goals within the context of classroom activities. This approach supports natural language acquisition, as they apply their newly learned skills in a meaningful environment. This intervention approach with allow us to address prevention and early intervention, and in the long run serve more students. Some of the benefits of this include, but are not limited to: education for classroom teachers on the role language plays in literacy and learning, and consulting and collaborating with the classroom teachers to ensure universal teaching practices to support the development of foundational speech and language skills.

As we incorporate these once-a-month push- in services, we are hopeful to decrease the number of students that have to be pulled out of the classroom for special education speech services, leaving them in their least restrictive environment. Each lesson will focus on a different aspect of language skills needed to be successful in schools and in everyday life. The lessons will be interactive and engaging giving students the chance to be a part of the teaching process. This is an individualized approach that will ensure all students, regardless of their language abilities, receive the support they need to thrive.

December Mentoring Lesson

The SEL lesson for December was Listening to Others.

Students broke into their mentor groups on Wednesday, December 6th. Some groups listened to a story about listening, where they heard about all the different ways they listen throughout the day. Then students broke into groups where they had the opportunity to play games with other students. During this time they had to remain in their group. They were asked to listen with eyes and ears, hands to self, and could not talk unless the other person was finished.

It was a lot of fun!
