6/5/26

Dear Western families,

We ended the week with our school buzzing as our 8th graders presented their Capstone projects. The murals students created contained symbols, images and colors that beautifully displayed the message of their project. The documentaries provided a deep look into issues important to our students with excellent interviews from members of our community. The infographics displayed the essential information in a creative way to relay the problem, causes and solution of an issue. Finally, it was so great watching the students get up in front of people and take a risk by doing a Ted Talk about their topic or presenting a podcast they created. It was wonderful seeing so many parents, district administrators and Board of Education members attend the presentations. Our 8th graders celebrated with some ice cream on the front lawn this afternoon. Please see the pictures below that really don’t capture how wonderful the two days at Western were.

I have included all the events taking place for the remainder of the year in this SMORE, so you can put everything on your calendar. Next week, I will be sending a separate email to 8th grade families with all the details parents need to be sure the day goes as smoothly as possible.

Have a nice weekend.

Sincerely,

Suzanne

Our June Difference Maker: Ms. Pia Ledina

We are proud to share that Ms. Pia Ledina, our Library Media Specialist, has been selected as our June Difference Maker for her outstanding dedication and tireless efforts to keep our Media Center an active hub for our school community. Ms. Ledina’s achievements are remarkable because of the challenges she has experienced this year. Despite having our media assistant cut to half time and operating without our IT support technician for more than half the year, Ms. Ledina never let the quality of the media center waver. Where others might have scaled back, she stepped up, ensuring our community was impacted as little as possible. Pia continued to collaborate with classroom teachers and host engaging book talks as often as needed, keeping students excited about reading. She worked to improve our digital literacy content and stepped in to provide critical technical support for teachers and administration throughout the year. Ms. Ledina embodies the very best of a true Difference Maker. Western is so lucky to have her as our Library Media Specialist.

District Parent Survey

Please take 2–3 minutes to share your confidential feedback on you and your child's experience this school year. Questions can be skipped if you do not have enough information or do not wish to answer them. Your opinions are essential to us and help shape planning for Western and the Greenwich Public School district. This is a custom link to your Greenwich Public Schools Family Survey. These emails come from Dr. Toni Jones <research@greenwich.k12.ct.us> with a subject line of Greenwich Public Schools Family Survey.

Save the Dates: Grade-level End of Year Trips

We are almost at the time of year when grade levels leave the building for most of the day to celebrate the end of the school year on their grade level trip. Below are the dates and destinations:

Monday, June 15th: 6th grade to Boundless Adventure in Purchase, NY

Tuesday, June 16th: 8th grade beach trip to Tod’s Point

Friday, June 19th: 7th grade to Rye Playland

Look out for an email from your child’s teachers and/or a permission slip coming home. Please return the permission slip with payment well in advance of the trip. We have financial assistance available, if families need this you can reach out to your child's school counselor.

A reminder that your child’s behavior in school leading up to the trip will determine if they can attend their trip. Some are testing us a little bit, and we have given them the same message. We will not take them to a public place if we can not trust them within our building. Please remind your child that they need to behave over the last two weeks to attend.

Hats For Hope Day on Monday

On Monday , we will be holding our annual “Hats for Hope” fundraiser to support the Yale New Haven Hospital. Students and stall are asked to wear hats (sun hats, silly hats, winter hats, baseball hats etc). Carla Lenschow, a sophomore at Greenwich High School, organizes this fundraiser. Her sister was treated for her leukemia blood cancer at the hospital and her family has a very special connection to the hospital. Students and staff are asked to donate $1, which will be collected in the main hallway before school. See the flyer for more information and a link to donate.

Filling in the Blanks Summer program

I wanted to share that registration for the Summer Weekend Meal Bag Program is open and can be delivered to your child at summer school. For children who are not attending a summer camp or summer school, we will have designated hub pick-up sites, in Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport.

Each child will receive one bag per week, and all children are welcome to participate and benefit from the program. Please note that this is a separate registration process from the regular school-year Weekend Meal Bag Program.

If families need assistance with registration, you are welcome to reach out to: operations@fillingintheblanks.org
