Car Line Request

Parents, please ensure your child is fully ready to exit the car when you reach the car line. Shoes, coats, backpacks, and breakfasts should all be taken care of before arriving. This helps keep the line moving efficiently.

Sheldon Field Trips

We will go on several field trips this year. Dates and locations are listed below. Parents are welcome to attend field trips BUT must provide their own transportation and their own entry fee. Siblings are welcome to attend, with parents providing transportation and entry fee, EXCEPT for the Discovery Center field trip as they are closed to the public on the day we visit and children outside of Sheldon will not be able to attend. We will pay all fees for Sheldon students. Even if their family attends, students are to stay with their school group. Finally, we require a signed permission slip before every field trip. Teachers will provide these. These MUST be completed in order for students to attend.

Discovery Center: Monday, February 16th @ 10:00-12:00 (upstairs classrooms)

Sheldon Head Start Policies & Procedures

As a federal Head Start program, Sheldon implements policies & procedures to ensure a safe and effective program. Each week, one will be posted here for review. This quarter our focus is on Mental Health and Child Development & Education Services.

Promoting Physical Development

POLICY:

Staff will actively support the physical development of all children—including those with disabilities — as a key part of promoting school readiness.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Provide 30 minutes of indoor and outdoor active play in both the morning and afternoon, focusing on large motor skills (e.g., running, climbing, jumping, riding).
  2. Offer a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and equipment that meet individual needs.
  3. Ensure adult supervision and support during physical activities to guide safe and effective use of materials.
  4. Include creative movement and fine motor activities such as obstacle courses, stacking, puzzles, lacing, and woodworking.
  5. Use assessment data to plan and individualize physical development activities in lesson plans.
  6. Promote social development through cooperative, non-competitive group games.
  7. Ensure all equipment meets current safety standards.

Outdoor Play Environment Requirements:

  • Multiple activity options (e.g., climbing, swinging, digging, pretend play)
  • Inclusive play opportunities for children with varying abilities
  • Open grassy areas and smooth surfaces for wheeled equipment
  • Ample space for safe, unrestricted movement
  • Varied textures (e.g., grass, sand, pavement, mulch)
  • Shaded areas for quiet play (e.g., puzzles, drawing)
  • Secure, organized storage for toys and equipment
  • Minimum 75 square feet per child of outdoor space
