Oh the Weather is so Delightful...

Please remember to send your child with clothes for all weather. It is very cold in the morning and warms up in the afternoon. Also, it can be wet in the morning. Please send your child with a change of clothes, just in case.

December OLL Day December OLL Day

December 15, 2023

We lucked out with the weather for OLL Day again! What an amazing day. It was great to see all the students ready to appreciate the outdoors. We welcomed Kelly back from the George Holmes Bixby Library. She read us the story "Where Would I Be in an Evergreen Tree?". We then traveled to different centers around the property. Students drank hot cocoa and roasted marshmallows and hot dogs. Mrs. Doell continued to nature journal with students. They worked on being close observers of the world around us. Students closely examined the food birds would be eating for winter. The detail and care they put into the drawings was amazing. Again, thank you to the PTO for bringing the Harris Center to us on OLL Days. It truly enhances our studies. Kara, from the Harris Center, taught us more about coniferous trees. They studied how the needles-leaves on trees have adapted to survive the cold weather. Ms. B. created a mural to hang in the hallway. Students depicted different ways animals prepare for winter.

Working Together

This week we looked at The Pug with the Pearl Earring, King Tutenkamen’s Mask, The Sorrows of the King by Henri Matisse, Romare Bearden’s Jammin at the Savoy, Picasso’s Three Musicians, and Wayne Thiebaud’s Cakes. We talked about sources for ideas, symmetry, repetition, contrast, and foreground. Students worked with these ideas as they created beautiful collages using paper they prepared with paint.

I look forward to our sculpture work when I return for the week of January 29th.

Thank you for supporting creativity!

We Are All Teachers

Grade 3-4 students have been learning about the Abenaki people who lived on this land for 12,00 years or more. We did some research about different tribes with Miss Brett last week, and learned some Native American games. We decided to teach some of the games to everyone at Community lunch, so groups had to plan how to teach the games and who would take on designated roles in this sharing. Math was involved when we estimated how many people might be in the cafeteria, and how many could be in a game group. Groups had to figure out the right number of pieces for their game to work with a large group. It was a multi-step process and we learned a lot of planning skills! Nicely done!
