A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy

Well, here we are—ready to say goodbye to April and hello to May this week! This rollercoaster of temperatures has certainly kept us guessing, but one thing is clear… spring has officially sprung. With that comes sunshine, fresh air, and yes, those seasonal allergies (I’m right there with you!).

We’ve been making the most of the warmer weather, especially by bringing our Physical Education classes outside. Our students absolutely love using our outdoor spaces, and it’s been wonderful to see them active, engaged, and enjoying time together in the fresh air.

This week, our Grade 3, 4, and 5 students will take the NYS Math Test—and they are ready. Our teachers have prepared them in the most authentic and meaningful way possible. One of the greatest strengths of PS 88Q is, without question, our staff. Their deep understanding of what students know and what they need next drives everything we do.

While there are many trends in education that emphasize technology, we remain grounded in what matters most: strong, in-person teaching and learning. Yes, there are times when technology is required, such as certain assessments, but we do not rely on test prep platforms or excessive screen time to prepare our students. Instead, we prioritize real instruction, thoughtful conversations, and meaningful practice.

At PS 88Q, screen time is intentionally limited in all areas and all grades. We know that students already spend a significant amount of time on screens both in and out of school. That’s why our classrooms—and even our afterschool programs—focus on hands-on learning, creativity, collaboration, and real experiences with peers.

If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of reducing screen time for children, I encourage you to take a look at this article.

Studio In A School Exhibition: Day 1 Studio In A School Exhibition: Day 1

April 26, 2026

We are so excited to celebrate the incredible work our students have been creating through our partnership with Studio in a School!

For the past 14 weeks, every class in Grades 1–5 has had the opportunity to work alongside a resident artist, exploring a specific art medium and developing their skills as young creators. Through this experience, our students have not only learned new techniques, but have also expressed their ideas, told stories, and built confidence in their artistic voices.

We are especially grateful to our talented artists-in-residence—Naima, Phylis, and Kelly—who have brought passion, creativity, and inspiration into our classrooms. Their work with our students has created lasting memories and sparked a love of the arts that we know will continue to grow.

Now, it’s time to celebrate!

Each residency will culminate in a gallery walk, where student artwork will be proudly displayed. Families are invited to attend, explore the exhibits, and celebrate the creativity and hard work of our students.

Summer Rising Offers

Summer Rising Results

Beginning Tuesday, April 21, families who submitted Summer Rising applications by the March 27 deadline can log in to MySchools.nyc to view their results. Summer Rising seats are limited—please only accept your child’s offer if your child will attend most of their scheduled program. Research shows that the more students show up, the better prepared they'll be to succeed in math and reading in the fall.

The last day to accept or decline Summer Rising offers is Tuesday, May 5—if accepting, make sure you answer any required questions to ensure your child’s seat! Summer Rising placements will not be confirmed unless families accept their offer by the deadline; your child will not be automatically enrolled. Accepting an offer will not affect your child’s chances of getting a waitlist offer at a later date.

Gifted And Talented @ PS 88Q Application for 2026-2027 Gifted And Talented @ PS 88Q Application for 2026-2027

At PS 88Q, our Gifted & Talented (G&T) program for students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 is designed to challenge, inspire, and empower learners to think deeply and creatively. Gifted and Talented education goes beyond traditional instruction by providing opportunities for students to engage in complex thinking, problem-solving, and advanced academic work.

A key component of our G&T program is our strong commitment to Project-Based Learning (PBL). Through this approach, students explore meaningful questions and real-world challenges over time, developing critical thinking, collaboration, and independence. High-quality projects require students to engage in intellectual challenge, connect learning to real-world experiences, collaborate with others, and present their work to authentic audiences . At PS 88Q, this means students are not only learning content, but also building the skills and confidence needed for future success.

PTA GENERAL MEETING—THANK YOU!

Thank you to all the parents who joined us for Thursday’s PTA General Meeting. We’re grateful to everyone who took time out of a busy week to be there in the auditorium and on Zoom, asking questions, sharing ideas, and helping shape what’s ahead for our school community.

One important focus at the meeting was the upcoming PS88 PTA Executive Board elections for the 2026–2027 school year. Serving on the PTA is a meaningful way to support our school, meet other families, and help create the kinds of events, communication, and community-building opportunities that make PS88 special.

As always, supervised activities will be available for students during PTA meetings. More details coming soon.

TEACHER & STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK—MAY 4–8

We’re excited to celebrate the incredible teachers and staff who give so much to our PS88 community every day. Staff Appreciation Week is always such a joyful week, and we’d love your help to make it extra special.

There are a few ways to get involved. You can volunteer during the school day, which is a lovely way to show appreciation while also meeting teachers, staff, and fellow PS88 parents. You can also contribute to our raffle by donating an item, securing a donation from a local business, or giving a gift card. No donation is too small. Prefer to contribute financially? You can send a donation via Zelle to pta88treasurer@gmail.com, and we’ll use it to purchase a raffle item on your behalf.
