Hermosa School Weekly Recap - Week of March 31 - April 3
Hornet Families,
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Soup and Sweets event last week! It was wonderful to see so many families come together to enjoy great food and support our school community.
This week, we kicked off South Dakota State Assessment testing on Tuesday. Our 8th and 5th graders took the science test, and on Wednesday, students in 6th-8th grade completed the English Language Arts assessment. We appreciate everyone’s hard work and focus during testing!
We also took time this week to celebrate Paraprofessional and School Librarian Appreciation Day. A huge thank you to all of our incredible paras and to Mrs. Kaiser, our librarian, for the dedication and support they provide to our students every day. Your hard work makes a difference, and we appreciate all that you do!

South Dakota State Assessment Dates
Dear Parents and Guardians,
State testing at Hermosa School for students in grades 3-8 will begin on April 1st. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning and growth. We appreciate your support in helping them do their best!
Here are some ways you can help your child be successful during testing:
✅ Ensure a Good Night’s Sleep – Make sure your child gets plenty of rest before each testing day.
✅ Provide a Healthy Breakfast – A nutritious meal helps with focus and energy.
✅ Arrive on Time – Being at school on time reduces stress and ensures your child doesn’t miss important instructions.
✅ Encourage a Positive Attitude – Remind your child to try their best and not to worry. A calm, confident mindset makes a difference!
✅ Avoid Scheduling Appointments – If possible, please schedule any doctor or dentist visits outside of testing hours.
Thank you for your partnership in making this a successful testing period for all our students. You can find the testing schedule below and all tests begin in the morning after breakfast is served. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman
Welcome April!
This week we kicked off our first round of the South Dakota State Assessment. It was great to hear students exclaiming about getting at least eight hours of sleep as we discussed the importance of a full night's rest before the Assessment. What was even more great to hear is they realize a difference in themselves on a full nights rest versus six or less hours of sleep.
April brings our last Character Counts, Citizenship. Citizenship is defined as:
- Do your share to make your home, school, and community better.
- Cooperate.
- Stay informed.
- Be a good neighbor.
- Make choices that protect the safety and rights of others.
Protect the environment.
Citizenship holds all of our Character Counts and boils down to how we treat those around us and the things around us. I love having this talk with students as they proudly share the ways they practice citizenship in helping others, picking up litter, pushing in chairs and all the other ways they help out when they see a need. How do you model citizenship?
