Solstice Celebration December 16

Each year, our school celebrates the return of light to our lives with a Solstice ceremony. This year, we’re happy to return to the Temple Emek Shalom for this event. It’s an off-campus location that allows the use of candles indoors in a beautiful, dark space.

It’s a school community event the involves all students, grades K through 8, staff and interested families. Traditionally, Jim’s class has “sponsored” this event.

We’ll be cutting boughs at Earth Teach for the creation of a spiral labyrinth on the day of the event, Friday, December 16.

To make this event possible, we need:

  • A parent to meet our group at Earth Teach around noon on Friday, December 9, with a pickup truck to haul down cut boughs to the Temple Emek Shalom on East Main Street near our campus. Students would load the truck with cut boughs and would unload it at around 2:15 at the temple.

  • Candles – we’re looking for donations of small candles to use in the celebration. If you’ve got some old candles laying around (especially with glass cradles), please consider donating or loaning them for the event. They can be sent to Jim in the coming weeks.

  • Parents to help set up the bough labyrinth in the early morning of Friday, December 16 at the Temple Emek Shalom. Josh McGrath has offered to help out and has been our resident “spiral master” for a few years now. We need approximately 4 or 5 parents for this task, beginning around 7:00 am.

  • Parents to help with clean up following the event. This would be from around 10:00 to 10:45 am.

  • A parent to haul away boughs following the event. They could all be yours! Imagine the possibilities. Students will load your vehicle.

Please let Jim know if you’re willing to help with any of the items above. James.Bowers@Ashland.k12.or.us

6th graders collecting data for a circle graph lesson in math

Some students were tallying the make of cars passing during a 30-minute period. Others were observing the colors of vehicles or the direction of travel. Data will be displayed on circle graphs made in class.

Upcoming Due Dates for Unit Rotation Projects

  • Monday, November 28

    • 6th graders: Send a picture of forest succession model to Jessica so she can check progress. Ideally, she’d have these pictures ahead of Monday. If sending a picture is not possible, students may bring in their project Monday. Email pictures to: Jessica.Zuzack@ashland.k12.or.us

    • 7th and 8th graders: Come to school with research and rough draft completed for Biome projects.

  • Wednesday, November 30

    • Carbon Cycle Diagrams due for all students, turned in to Jim, in color.

    • 6th graders: Forest Succession turned in to Jessica.

    • 7th and 8th graders: Biomes projects turned in to Jessica.

Genre Cards

  • Third genre cards will be due, in final copy, on Friday, December 16.

  • Rough drafts need to be turned in a couple of days in advance to allow time for editing, but can be turned in immediately, if ready.

  • Students should continue to read on a regular basis at home.

Winter Faire –Thursday, December 15

  • Annual Winter Faire will be December 15 at the school from 5:30 - 7PM. While the last few years have been a school day event, we are now transitioning back to an evening event that includes families.

  • Parent volunteer(s) needed. We need help with the middle school craft.

    • Each year, every class makes some sort of craft to sell for a nominal fee at the Winter Faire. We’ve done note cards with little block prints or soaps or picture frames in the past.

    • Work with our middle school students to create some sort of craft for this year’s Winter Faire. Is there a nifty craft you’d be interested in teaching to kids? Any exciting ideas? If so, please reach out to Jim or Jessica, who will do what they can to help your vision become this year’s craft.

  • Another much-loved piece of our school’s Winter Faire is a “Re-Gifting Room.”

    • For several weeks leading up to the event, the school community collects items that families donate.

    • At the Winter Faire, each student gets to “shop” for a gift (that is wrapped by older students) to give someone over the holidays.

    • Do you have things you’ve been trying to get out of your house? Books, home décor, toys, art, electric wine bottle openers. Items should be in good used, or new, condition.

    • Please no stuffies or pre-loved blankets due to health issues.

    • Please bring in items for the Re-Gifting Room beginning next week. We’ll have bins near the office for placing these items and will collect them up until the Winter Faire on December 15.

    • The school also needs donations of wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper and tape to be used in wrapping these gifts. Bring these to the school office beginning next week.
