LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hello Arleta Families, Caregivers and Community! What a magnificent Walk & Bike to School turnout it was today! Thank you to our families and staff who brought us all such inspiration and celebration.
It’s been a great week of learning and fun inside Arleta classrooms! Plenty of playful learning and plenty of serious learning. Here are a few snippets from staff newsletters across the grades.
"We’ve been reading the fantastic book, “Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt de la Pena. This book is part of our unit on the five senses and has us think about how CJ, the main character, uses his senses to learn." ~Ms. Arias
"We are learning about glued sounds. I can read and write words with these sounds." ~Ms. DeNiro
"Ask Me About: Math- Part and Whole. What is a bar graph? What is a picture graph? Next week we’re learning two-step word problems." ~Ms. Jacobs
"Big news: our class earned their 20th dolphin today towards a glow party! Which means tomorrow afternoon we get to celebrate. We will have black lights, special coloring sheets and fun music. If your kiddo is able to wear all white, all black or something neon it would add to the fun." ~Ms. Maggie
"Learning starts promptly at 8:00am Students can enter, get breakfast, unpack their bags, fill their water bottles, and get sorted for the day at 7:53 am. We are learning who different people who work in our school are and how we can act in respectful ways towards them." ~Teacher Noah
"We are learning spelling patterns. We are also learning how to write a paragraph using evidence from The Birchbark House, a novel we’ve begun reading that is set in 1847 in the Great Lakes Region." ~Ms. Bidney, Mr. Cooke
I’m loving learning right alongside every child and within every classroom. Our teachers are making the purpose for what students are learning and doing clear. This is the student learning experience we want for our Arleta students! Students are learning grade level standards. They understand what they’re expected to learn and what we want them to be able to do, and why that’s important. They understand what they’re expected to do to show they’ve learned the standard. As the Chinese philosopher Xunzi said way back in 300 BC.. “involve me and I learn”.
In the spirit of essential and playful learning, and within the challenging context of talking to our kids about what’s going on in our community, here is a kid-friendly, effective ICE protection video from Bread and Puppet Theatre, shared by one of our Arleta Families to share far and wide.
A reminder Friday is a state-wide inservice day: no school for students or staff. Many educators across the state will be engaging in professional learning.
Warmly,
Lisa
ARLETA NEWS
WALK & ROLL DAY A BIG SUCCESS!
A big thank you to all the families who took part in Walk & Roll Day! Walking, biking, and otherwise rolling to school has big impacts on mental health, physical health, and the environment, and we're proud of everyone's participation! Students who walked or rolled to school had the chance to choose a prize and entered a raffle .
BIKE BUS IS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED
The Arleta Bike Bus kicked off yesterday on Walk & Roll To School Day! Want to join the Bike Bus on Wednesdays? Please fill out this survey, so we can plan inclusive routes for our Bike Bus Wednesdays: Arleta Bike Bus Interest Form. We want to grow the Arleta Bike Bus and include as many riders as possible. If you have questions, please email Rachel Ray at rray@pps.net.
What is a Bike Bus? Click here to learn more..
*Afternoon return routes are TBD, as we do not have supervising volunteers to ride home with students yet. At this time families will need to arrange for transporting their riders safely home after school.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
If any of our families or students were approached by Homeland Security, they do not have to, and should not, respond. Families and students can remain silent no matter what is being asked of them. If any of our families were to see ICE talking to someone in a public location, such as a bus stop, our community can remind anyone we see being approached: “You can stay silent; they can’t do anything.” (Buses are private, but bus stops are public: ICE can approach people in public, but again, no one has to respond to them in public or private spaces). ICE can request to come into our school office (only; not the school itself), but we will not buzz them in: our office staff will go to the door (to say we won’t give them any information and that they cannot enter our school). In the main office we have the The Immigrant Legal Resource Center Little Red Cards, which is meant to help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations. These can be printed out and carried on your person and we have copies available in all our supported languages in the school office; feel free to stop in and ask for one.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH POETRY AND STORIES
In week one of our celebration we featured some museums and music, in week two we featured some recipes and crafts. In week three we learned about organizations in our community and famous Latines past and present and in week four we talked languages! Now, let's talk literature, by exploring the poetry of Gabriela Mistral.
The first Latine writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature was Chilean poet and educator Gabriela Mistral (the pen name of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga), in 1945. Here is an extensive biographical article on her by the Poetry Foundation.
This is a poem that she wrote about parenthood. The English translation is below the original version.
Yo No Tengo Soledad
Es la noche desamparo
de las sierras hasta el mar.
Pero yo, la que te mece,
¡yo no tengo soledad!
Es el cielo desamparo
si la luna cae al mar
Pero yo, la que te estrecha,
¡yo no tengo soledad!
Es el mundo desamparo
y la carne triste va
Pero yo, la que te prime,
¡yo no tengo soledad!
I Do Not Know Solitude
The night, it is deserted
From the mountains to the sea.
But I, the one who rocks you,
I am not alone!
The sky, it is deserted
For the moon falls to the sea.
But I, the one who holds you,
I am not alone!
The world, it is deserted
And the flesh, in sadness, carries on.
But I, the one who cuddles you,
I am not alone!
One of her most famous poems is still taught to students in primary school in Chile today. Below, read Piecitos de Niño, both the original and a translation.
Piecitos de Niño
Piececitos de niño,
azulosos de frío,
¡cómo os ven y no os cubren,
Dios mío!
¡Piececitos heridos
por los guijarros todos,
ultrajados de nieves
y lodos!
El hombre ciego ignora
que por donde pasáis,
una flor de luz viva
dejaís;
que allí donde ponéis
la plantita sangrante,
el nardo nace más
fragrante.
Sed, puesto que macháis
por los caminos rectos,
heróicos como sois
perfectos.
Piececitos de niño,
dos joyitas sufrientes,
¡cómo pasan sin veros
las gentes!
Little Feet of Children
Little feet of children
blue with cold,
how can they see you and not cover you—
dear God!
Little wounded feet
cut by every stone,
hurt by snow
and mire.
Man, blind, does not know
that where you pass,
you leave a flower
of living light.
And where you set
your little bleeding foot,
the spikenard blooms
more fragrant.
Walking straight paths,
be heroic, little feet,
as you are
perfect.
Little feet of children,
two tiny suffering jewels,
how can people pass
and not see you!

NEWBERY BOOK OF THE WEEK
SIMON SORT OF SAYS BY ERIN BOW - 2024 NEWBERY HONOR
NEWBERY HONOR AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • SCHNEIDER FAMILY BOOK AWARD HONOR • FINALIST FOR THE AUDIE AWARD FOR BEST MIDDLE GRADE AUDIOBOOK OF THE YEAR
“Funny, poignant and—most important—hopeful.” —New York Times
Simon O’Keeffe’s biggest claim to fame should be the time his dad accidentally gave a squirrel a holy sacrament. Or maybe the alpaca disaster that went viral on YouTube. But the story the whole world wants to tell about Simon is the one he’d do anything to forget: the one starring Simon as a famous survivor of gun violence at school.
Two years after the infamous event, twelve-year-old Simon and his family move to the National Quiet Zone—the only place in America where the internet is banned. Instead of talking about Simon, the astronomers who flock to the area are busy listening for signs of life in space. And when Simon makes a friend who’s determined to give the scientists what they’re looking for, he’ll finally have the chance to spin a new story for the world to tell.
Simon Sort of Says, the Newbery Honor-winning novel by Erin Bow, is a breathtaking testament to the lasting echoes of trauma, the redemptive power of humor, and the courage it takes to move forward without forgetting the past.
