Big Ideas, Bold Expressions, and Eagle Excellence! Big Ideas, Bold Expressions, and Eagle Excellence!

What a week of creativity and discovery at WTHS! From spirited Emerson debates and Roaring Twenties presentations to global diplomacy, candy-inspired economics, expressive sculptures, and a hands-on volume lab, our Eagles brought learning to life. Our students and teachers continue to find creative ways to explore new ideas and stay engaged in their lessons.

I’m excited to share how our students are thinking critically, sharing their voices, and putting their creativity to work. Enjoy this week’s classroom highlights!

My students have been busy exploring the metric system through a variety of engaging, hands-on learning activities. Our focus has been on helping students understand measurement and how it applies to everyday life.

Throughout this unit, students have been learning about mass, length, and volume while practicing how to use scientific measuring tools and record their findings accurately.

Most recently, students participated in an exciting Volume Lab, where they had the opportunity to:

  • Measure liquids using graduated cylinders and test tubes.

  • Explore water displacement to determine the volume of objects such as marbles.

  • Calculate the volume of rectangular objects using length × width × height.

  • Practice counting water drops and comparing measurements.

  • Collect, record, and analyze data from their experiments.

These activities have provided students with opportunities to strengthen their scientific inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, and mathematical skills.

As part of my Special Education instructional approach, I have incorporated visual demonstrations, step-by-step instructions, guided practice, and collaborative learning to ensure that all students can actively participate and experience success.

My goal is to make science meaningful, engaging, and accessible to every student. It has been rewarding to see students build confidence as they apply what they have learned through hands-on experiences.

I wanted to share a brief glimpse of the exciting learning taking place in our classroom!

Learning Science One Measurement at a Time!

Students in Mrs. Taylor’s Special Education Science classes at Winslow Township High School have been busy exploring the exciting world of measurement through a hands-on Volume Lab!

As part of their study of the metric system, students learned how to measure the amount of space an object or liquid takes up, known as volume. Using graduated cylinders, water, marbles, rulers, and other laboratory tools, students practiced measuring liquids and solids. They also discovered how water displacement can be used to determine the volume of an irregularly shaped object.

Before beginning the lab, students learned the metric system prefixes through creative activities, including making charts, using memory tricks (mnemonics), and learning a fun metric system rap song!

The Volume Lab encouraged students to work together, follow procedures, make observations, record data, and strengthen their problem-solving skills.

The goal was simple: Make science fun, meaningful, and accessible to all learners!

Through hands-on experiences, our students are building confidence, developing important science skills, and discovering that science is all around us!

Big Ideas, Global Voices: Winslow Model UN Takes on the World at SJMUN! Big Ideas, Global Voices: Winslow Model UN Takes on the World at SJMUN!

On Saturday (10/17), students from Winslow’s Model United Nations team traveled to Eastern Regional High School to participate in our first academic conference of the school year, South Jersey Model UN (SJMUN)!

Students demonstrated their research and public speaking skills, serving as delegates from various nations across the world, including Egypt, Germany, Kenya, and Italy. They served in committees dedicated to preventing future pandemics, stabilizing the Strait of Hurmuz, addressing the South China sea dispute, and the international use of bioweaponry.

Both returning club members and our novice recruits performed exceptionally, making their advisors and all of Winslow proud!

A special shout out to our Secretary General Zienia Moseley for taking on her FIRST advanced committee, serving on the Privy Council of King Edward IV in 1463!

What an amazing way to start out the competition season! Students will continue to learn and grow in preparation for our January conferences. Go WINMUN!!!

Team Hen vs. Team Farm Animals: An Egg-cellent Emerson Showdown! Team Hen vs. Team Farm Animals: An Egg-cellent Emerson Showdown!

After reading Ralph Waldo Emerson’s transcendentalist essay “Self-Reliance” and his philosophical writing Nature in small groups, this English 11 Honors class debated Emersonian ideals and made text-to-text connections using the classic fable of The Little Red Hen.

Students were assigned a side, The Affirmative “Team Hen” and The Negative “Team Farm Animals,” and were asked to form an argument on who upheld the transcendental beliefs of non-conformity, self-reliance, intuition, reliance on society and individuality the best. Students needed to form a concise argument and a rebuttal, then back it up with evidence from the two texts. This class took it to the next level by creating a cheer routine and a diss track to mirror their evidence!

The debate got passionate, with each side feeling as though they were right, but in the end, students had mastered two complex texts and were able to apply the concepts to a children’s book.

Secret Doors and Jazz Floors: Bringing the Roaring Twenties to Life! Secret Doors and Jazz Floors: Bringing the Roaring Twenties to Life!

Students in Ms. McGuirl’s 8th-period U.S. History II class stepped into the Roaring Twenties as they presented their 1920s Speakeasy 3D Model Projects! The assignment challenged students to design hidden establishments disguised behind everyday businesses, combining creative construction with historical research.

Through their presentations, students explained how their designs connected to Prohibition, jazz culture, and the tension between government enforcement and public defiance. Secret entrances, escape routes, and miniature interiors gave students a hands-on way to explore a complex era in American history.

History, creativity, and public speaking—all coming together in one roaring learning experience! Great job students!

One Piece or the Whole Bowl? A Sweet Lesson in the Tragedy of the Commons! One Piece or the Whole Bowl? A Sweet Lesson in the Tragedy of the Commons!

This week students in Mr. Knox class did an activity exploring the economic theory of Tragedy of the Commons. Students explored the environmental applications of this theory that we most often look out for our own well-being and success not the well-being and success of the masses.

We applied the theory to Halloween and someone placing a bowl of candy out for Halloween and would they take one piece of candy, a handful, or all the candy. We discussed what would happen if the homeowner was sitting there and how their mentality might change. We explored this is idea and the application of why laws and limits are established to maintain the well-being of all and not just a few citizens. We discussed the further ecological dilemmas around the world of usage/demand vs availability.

Making Faces! Art Students Bring Big Expressions to Life in 3D Making Faces! Art Students Bring Big Expressions to Life in 3D

This week in Mrs. Christ's Art III and SAS, students worked on a project titled "Expressive Sculptures".

Students were asked to design a character with an exaggerated expression. They started with rough sketches of their ideas which turned into a paper foundation to be covered by plaster strips. The plaster strips are layered and then used to build features and the "expression". Once building process is complete, acrylic paint will be used to finish their masterpieces... Stay tuned for end results!

Meet Our Newest Assistant Principal - Ms. Jackson Meet Our Newest Assistant Principal - Ms. Jackson

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

I am excited and honored to join the Winslow community as Vice Principal! I look forward to getting to know our students, staff, families, and community and building relationships that will make a lasting difference. I was born and raised in New Jersey, and family is a big part of who I am. I am a proud wife, mother of three, and sister, and my family continues to remind me of the importance of love, patience, understanding, and showing up for others.

My educational journey has taken me through Grambling State University, William Paterson College, and the College of Saint Elizabeth, where I continued to grow both personally and professionally. With 24 years in education, I began my career in early childhood education and have had the privilege of serving in several roles, including Lead Educator, Instructional Coach, Interventionist, Curriculum Trainer, and Vice Principal. I also hold a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Each of these experiences has shaped the educator and leader I am today and strengthened my belief that education is about so much more than what happens in the classroom. It is about building confidence, creating opportunities, and helping students recognize just how much they are capable of achieving.

My educational philosophy is simple: every student deserves to feel seen, heard, valued, and encouraged to be their best. I believe relationships are at the heart of successful schools. Students need adults who believe in them, listen to them, hold them accountable, and encourage them even when things get difficult. I also believe our teachers and staff deserve a leader who listens, supports their growth, values their ideas, and understands that we are all working toward the same goal: student success. When schools and families work together, students are better equipped to grow academically, socially, and personally.

As I begin this new chapter in Winslow, I come with an open mind, a willingness to listen and learn, and a genuine commitment to serving this community. I want students to know they have someone in their corner, staff to know they have a supportive partner, and families to know that their voices and perspectives matter. I believe leadership is not just about having a title; it is about being present, building trust, following through, and doing the work even when no one is watching.

I am grateful for the opportunity to become part of the Winslow family, and I look forward to learning from you, growing with you, and celebrating the successes we will achieve together. At the heart of everything I do is a genuine love for education and a belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. I am here to serve with purpose, lead with heart, and make a positive difference in the lives of our students. I look forward to a wonderful journey together!

Mrs. Emily McBride

"Mrs. McBride always manages to step up and take over tasks that were not hers initially. She goes above and beyond not only helping the English department, but the entire staff and the students. Even with the newly closed campus concept, she still finds a way to allow the students access to the library early in order to print out any work or assignments they may need for the day as well as throughout the day, since for many students this is a new challenge for them.

During benchmark testing, she opened the library to so many students to assist teachers with completing benchmark #1 when students did not have their Chromebook or other challenging tech issues. This alone helped the department obtain a higher completion rate than would have been achieved without her help.

In addition, she is always willing to assist staff with the pesky copy machine, which is the kryptonite for many teachers here. She goes above and beyond daily and always with a smile."

"Ms. McGuirl had a medical emergency happen in her classroom during study hall. She remained calm during the entire event, tended to the student while maintaining order of her classroom and ensuring students obtained help from the nurse while ensuring to empty the classroom in an orderly fashion. Her actions ensured the safety and dignity of the student was maintained. Remaining calm in a time of crisis isn't easy and she did it without question!

Some educators teach lessons. Others inspire the people around them to become better versions of themselves. Her passion for teaching motivates both students and staff to strive for excellence. Every conversation feels like professional development, and on my toughest days, a few minutes of her time is enough to remind me why I love this profession. As the saying goes, one day with a great teacher is worth more than a thousand days of study. That teacher is Mrs. Jaime McGuirl."

Dr. Richman Mathis

"Since meeting Dr. Mathis, he has consistently gone above and beyond to assist me with the day-to-day operations at Winslow Township High School. Although I am not new to the district, transitioning into my new role at the high school has introduced me to different procedures, platforms, and responsibilities.

Dr. Mathis has been incredibly patient, approachable, and willing to share his knowledge. Having experienced what it feels like to be new and need guidance, he understands the importance of extending that same support to others. No matter how big or small my questions may be, he always takes the time to help.

What I appreciate most is that his willingness to assist comes from a genuine desire to see others succeed. His kindness, professionalism, and team-oriented attitude reflect the true meaning of being a supportive colleague.

Dr. Mathis reminds us that making a difference doesn't always require a grand gesture. Sometimes, it's simply taking the time to help someone else succeed. Dr. Mathis is truly deserving of October Staff Recognition."
