A Note From Mr. Wilson
As we return from spring break, we hope it provided an opportunity for students and staff to rest, recharge, and step away from the daily routine. This time away can be valuable in helping everyone come back refreshed and ready for the home stretch of the school year. It is a great point in the calendar to refocus and prepare for a strong finish.
The remainder of the year is an important time, and we are seeing many positive things happening across the district. From classroom learning to activities and events, our students and staff continue to represent our schools well. We are doing a lot of great things, and with continued focus and effort, we look forward to finishing the year strong.on.
Mr. Dustin Wilson, Superintendent of Schools.
School Finance Update
Our district, like many across Kansas, is facing ongoing budget challenges that are not unique to us. One of the primary factors is declining enrollment, a trend being seen in districts across the state. Because school funding is closely tied to student enrollment, fewer students means fewer resources to support programs, staff, and daily operations. This is not a short-term issue—it reflects a broader shift that is impacting communities large and small and requires us to think differently about how we operate moving forward.
At the same time, the cost of providing services continues to rise, especially in the area of special education. Schools are required to meet the needs of all students, and those services are becoming more intensive and more expensive. While some funding is provided through state and federal sources, their share falls well short of covering the actual cost of meeting their statutory obligations. In Kansas, that number is 92%. As a result, USD 243, like many districts, must use more of their general fund to make up the difference, adding pressure to an already tight budget.
In response, USD 243 has been taking steps to ensure long-term sustainability. This includes closely reviewing expenditures, evaluating staffing and programming, and looking for ways to operate more efficiently while maintaining a strong educational experience for students. These are not quick fixes, but intentional steps to position the district for the future. We remain committed to being transparent with our community and making decisions that balance current needs with long-term stability. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at the district office.
Strategic Plan Update
At this time, we are pausing work on the district’s strategic plan due to ongoing scheduling conflicts. While this is not ideal, it is important that this process is done the right way, with the appropriate time, attention, and participation from our stakeholders. Rushing through it without full engagement would not produce the kind of plan our district needs.
The strategic plan remains an important piece of our long-term direction. It helps guide decision-making, align priorities, and ensure we are meeting the needs of our students, staff, and community. We have already gathered valuable survey data, and that input will be used to help inform the process when we resume.
At this point, the timeline for reopening the strategic planning process will depend on scheduling with KASB. Once those details are finalized, we will communicate next steps with our community and provide updates as they become available.
State Assessments
State assessments are approaching, and this is an important time for our students and staff. These assessments provide valuable information about student learning and help guide decisions at both the classroom and district level. We want to continue to approach this time with focus and purpose.
You can support your student by helping ensure they are prepared each day. A good night’s sleep, proper nutrition, and consistent attendance all play an important role in student performance. Establishing routines and encouraging a positive mindset can make a meaningful difference during the assessment window.
Our students have consistently performed at levels that outpace the state in many areas, and we want to continue that trajectory. Your support in encouraging your student to give their best effort is appreciated. If you have any questions regarding state assessments, please reach out to your building principal.
