A Message from Our Principal
A couple of weeks ago, TIMA parents and staff gathered for our first Book Club to discuss The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. The book connects a “phone-based childhood” to a growing mental health crisis, arguing that kids today are overprotected in the real world and underprotected online. Haidt proposes four norms: no smartphones before high school, no social media before 16, phone-free schools, and more independence and free play.
The topic sparked a lot of thoughtful discussions. One parent of a teenager said that addressing this issue felt like trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube, while parents of younger children were thinking ahead about how to navigate what’s coming. Regardless of our children’s ages, one thing was abundantly clear: it’s critical that we talk to one another. Parents shared ideas like planning intentional screen-free get-togethers and forming parent pacts to resist the middle schooler’s claim that they’re “the only kid without a phone.” The more we talk about this as educators and parents, the more we can grow a culture of support for one another.
The book club was a wonderful experience, and we hope to host another one in the second semester. If you have a book suggestion, please send it my way!
I enjoyed the book club format so much that our next Parent Plug-In will be more conversational as well. Please join us this Wednesday, November 4, at 8:45 at TIMA to talk about career connections. We’d love to hear which career experiences have made the biggest impact on your children, and we’ll share how we integrate career connections into TIMA’s unique place-based curriculum.
Lastly, a shout-out to everyone who volunteered at the YMCA Trunk or Treat! TIMA’s “Under the Sea” theme came out incredible! Thank you for the time and creativity you shared to make it so special.
With gratitude,
Alicia Beck
Principal
Parent Support Requested
TIMA is currently crafting an academy-wide AI policy to guide the use of AI as a resource. This technology is expanding exponentially in the marketplace and on all online platforms, so we want to ensure that we have thoughtful guidance to support our staff and students and ensure, as always, that our practices maintain student privacy and support student learning. We are looking for a few volunteers to read our draft policy and to share some feedback from a parent perspective. If you would be willing to lend some time to support this process, please just click the link below to sign up.

Lunch Volunteers
Give a Teacher a Duty-Free Lunch! 🍎
Our goal is to provide every teacher with one duty-free lunch each week—and we need your help to make it happen!
As a lunch volunteer, you’ll help students move through the lunch line, open lunch items, supervise students, tidy up between lunches, and occasionally tackle a spill or two. Most importantly, your time gives a TIMA teacher a chance to enjoy a well-deserved break during the school day.
Ready to help? Check out the available lunch volunteer slots and sign up using the button below!
Not yet a certified volunteer? No problem! Use the button below to visit our volunteer page and complete the required steps to get started.

We love seeing volunteers on campus! Volunteers must first be cleared through the VISTA background check process and have completed the required Praesidium training. Please complete the simple registration and application process . The system also enables us to track volunteer hours. Tracking volunteers is important to TIMA's grant initiatives. Please help us by ensuring you are tracking your volunteer hours
